Nikon D810 + 200-500 zoom, hand held, wide open.

The lens is sharp, the D810 has accurate focus; this lens focuses at a more leisurely pace than the 500 f4. Shooting at f5.6 often means higher ISOs. The VR is very effective. I like this lens but I'm keep the 500 f4 as well.

Still undecided whether to add the D500 to my camera portfolio.

very nice images taken and sharp. The 200-500m with your D810 is excellent.

Thanks,

Adrian

Nice pictures. Were these hand held or on a monopod/tripod?

With the 500 f4 I always use a tripod, so the zoom is somewhat refreshing.

But, curiously, with the camera on tripod I can set it down anytime I like; with the zoom I'm always holding it.

Hand holding the zoom is a viable option. There are times at Magee Marsh when tripods are discouraged. This is a nice way to go.

Thanks for the feedback, I have been arguing and trying to pass it for now. I am not sure with that bulk and size, I would be able to handhold it or should I say comfortable hand holding it.

Thom has shared his thoughts about what he calls "The DX/FX Combo Kit" recently here:

Hi Maljo,

Your pix are just beautiful. I have the same combo and I'm always impressed with the WOW factor of the 810 when its coupled with good glass. I think the 200-500 is a really good lens and at $1400, its a great lens. Have a great weekend.

Jake.

I agree with the 'wow' factor.

Excellent shots. I think you are getting the most out of both your camera and lens.

As to the D500: I have used the 200-500 on my D800 with very good results. Like you, I usually carry a tripod for both stability and the luxury of being able to set the combo down for breaks. I have had the 200-500 on my D500 all spring trying to get used to it. Quite frankly, it requires a much higher level of technique shooting something that is 750mm equivalent. I'm still learning (I hope.)

Great shots. I really like the goldfinch with the thistle. I too love my 200-500. Great lens for the price.

Why not two kits? I decided likewise to keep my 500 f4 and use it with sturdy tripod and Wimberley head with TC14EIII to get 700mm at f5.6 on a D810. For other times when I need to be mobile, I take my D500 with 200-500. The D500 + 200-500 combo is good enough that I don't feel as if I'm compromising IQ - and it lets me get the shots at locations where I can't take the tripod+gimbal+500f4+TC.

Lastly, WRT the f4 vs. f5.6... I find that I normally prefer to use the 500 f4 stopped down to f5.6 - it seems to reduce flare slightly and improves contrast (mine is the 500f4 VR version - others may disagree). I don't see enough improvement in stopping down the 200-500, so I don't hesitate to use it wide open in less than bright sun.

But that's for your input.

hand held I assume. For some images would be hard to get the 500 f4 or 600 f4 out, mounted on a tripod and pointed in the right direction before the subject moved on.

This was the case for my fawn image.
