Big Metabones smart adapter firmware updates

I was pretty happy with v2.2 on my EM1 and Bo-Ming seemed concerned about how my 300mm f/4 worked on v2.3. Maybe v2.4 has been tweaked. Hard to believe that it can also do CAF.

The performance on the A7R is miraculous, especially as AF on the A7R seems to be a best-efforts function with native lenses. Immediately bought a used 35mm f/2 before prices in GBP start to drift upwards.

... as some people have already noted. Especially noteworthy is that for the first time there is now C-AF for the E-M1 with Canon EF lenses, which, although it will be limited by what the E-M1 can do when using Four Thirds lenses (a smaller number of AF points, no AF in video mode), sounds like a really major breakthrough. I'm quite excited to hear more about it, how it will work in practice.

Almost seems as though the decision to buy one of each was a shrewd move rather than a severe GAS attack.

I've just spent the morning evaluating the new firmware with my EM-1, metabones smart T + EF 400 f5.6L shooting a variety of gulls, kite surfing and windsurfing on my local beach. SAF is improved (although it still struggles a bit with poor contrast, gull against white sky shots) and I'm more than happy that the update has worked well here. CAF is enabled but under the prevailing conditions I found it was losing track of focus within 3 shots in a sequence, then drifting back as the sequence progressed (that said - its a great achievement to get it to work at all.

A couple of long range Kiting and windsurfing shots attached - each crops of more than 50%

I'm delighted with this upgrade, well done Metabones

Which reminds me very much of the few attempts I made with my ZD 50-200 (with and without converters) using C-AF for birds in flight...

One of the more interesting questions regarding the E-M1 II is whether it might come with improvements in phase detection AF for DSLRs lenses, especially C-AF...

Cheers,

It seems to the "there" Brian, worth the patience?

Now we seem to have adapted lenses that are truly useful AF lenses as well. And of course we can fully use them as MF lenses as well (for purity - grin).

I spent the morning shooting with the EM-1 + metabones T + 400f5.6L and can confirm that the performance is still first rate.

However, I've just got round to trying v2.4 with my EF 70-300LIS and seen a somewhat surprising drop in focus speed, with a fair bit of hunting going on (previously it was very fast and accurate).

I'm checking to see if I have set anything wrong to cause this effect (although all I did was swap lenses) but something odd seems to have happened.

I would be interested to hear from anyone else using this lens what their experience has been

edit:

I've been through all my setting and can confirm that v2.4 has definitely degraded the AF performance with my 70-300 LIS, which has episodes of serious hunting when changing focal length. (When the subject distance / focal length remains fixed its not too bad)

I've repeated my tests with the EF 4005.6L and there the improvement in performance is consistent and significant - how odd?

Oh well, that's the 400 on the EM-1 and the 70-300 LIS on the 7Dmk2 then :)

Well, .... to think I was actually pretty happy with v1.8 .....

Surely we cannot do better than oem speeds? But from what it seems at least with the A7 series Bo-Ming has the Sony native adapters on the hop.

One might wonder if the mirrorless bodies had better operating systems than Canon bodies then interfacing Canon EF lenses might even beat Canon oem levels of performance. Something that had not even crossed my mind before. I don't think that this has happened or will necessarily happen. But up until now I was only hoping for "adequate" performance. Now the bar has been raised higher.

I've had a bit more time to evaluate the new firmware:

- positive result is that my EF 400 f5.6L is now blazingly fast and accurate and is working well with things like "big BIF", aircraft and all static / moving terrestrial subjects

- negative result is that both my zoom lenses (EF70-300 LIS and EF-S 15-85) hunt like crazy and many times are unable to lock focus.

With v2.1 the 70-300 LIS in particular had no problems with hunting and focused accurately and rapidly

(This is with the EM-1 + smart T adapter )

I'd be interested to hear of other people's experiences to see if this is specific to my system or a more general effect

I've been doing a fair bit more work with the 70-300 LIS on the EM-1 + smart T and it still hunts but what I have found is that, if It doesn't lock first time in the cycle, releasing the shutter button then quickly repressing will most often lock it. When shooting things like aircraft in flight or larger birds (pigeons and larger) once locked it will quickly re-lock if I release the shutter button, recompose and repress)

Is my memory wrong in thinking that somewhere or other there is a setting that stops the camera continually trying to focus lock if it misses on the first cycle (or is that my 7Dmk2 only?)

I had the same focus-hunting experience with Canon 70-300L IS and Sigma 18-300 lenses using the Smart Adapter and the Ultra Speed Booster adapters. This problem was especially evident when focusing on something far and then moving to focus something real close.

I finally ended up downgrading to v2.3 to solve this.

That's right. Each one of the versions is it's own executable file. So to get back to v2.3 (or anything earlier) you need the executable for that version.

Thanks
