I thought I would slowly getting used to the Pen-F when she surprises me with some highly erratic issues. This time, I simply used a different SD card - and the camera started at 00000 again, when I took 2 lots of photos and wanted to save them to a certain folder on my computer, there was a question whether or not I wanted to replace the current photos with the new ones??????

Can this be rectified for good?? I find this defaulting to re-set the counter every time you insert a new SD card highly irritating and have no idea as to how to rectify this issue.

A great camera, but where on Earth does this defaulting to reset to zero come from??

Thanks

Try Custom Menu H and the File Name item should be set to Auto to keep incrementing the file numbers forever. I hope it is still there, been in that place in the menus for a long while.

And yes the factory default of reset with new card or freshly formatted card is totally nuts.

Meanwhile here's the notes on that item extracted from my E-P5 help page....

Set to Auto and the file numbers keep increasing even when a new card is inserted, the numbers carry on from the last shot taken or the highest number found on the card, whichever is the highest. A new folder is created on the card when the file number rolls over the 9,999 count to 0001.
Set to Reset, and the file numbering always starts from 0001 on a fresh card inserted or if the card has been formatted.
Find the true shot count of a body by entering the service mode, method is here.

Thanks for that! I checked this of course and the file re-eset was set to AUTO, but the file names still went back to 00000 when I inserted a different SD card ...

No idea as to how to resolve this matter ... since the new card although set to AUTO still resets itself back to 00000 when I re-insert the card.

Thanks for trying but this sure is annoying.

I checked the Pen-F manual and the Custom Menu H is still the same.

They fail to tell you that the Auto settings runs up to xxxx9999 then rolls over to xxxx0001 but this time in a new folder on the card.

When you download the card, the folder numbers are ignored and you will get just the xxxx0001 filename which will clash if you put every shot ever taken into the same folder. Separated into day dated folders then there's never a problem, unless you take 10,000 images in the one day.

The xxxx part of the filename is changeable, so I always edit that to tell me the camera used, such as now with two E-P5 cameras in action I have EP5A1234 and EP5B1234 as my file names so no clashes there either.

That sounds like a camera problem as in Auto the camera should always remember which was the last file number shot taken and then carry on from there.

I hate to say it, but first try would be a full reset and set the menu item back to Auto and test it again. Then comes the boring job of getting the camera back to the way you like it. :-(

After in "H" custom settings I set the Filename = Auto mine never goes back to zero.

Are you sure that the File name does not say Reset?

If you still have the problem you may need to call Olympus CS.

I just talked to Olympus Australia tech help desk and they told me that the camera has the same numbering system as the compact models where a change cannot be done.

They tol me they would get in touch with Japan and let me know next week how I can circumnavigate this issue.

Not impressed.

Haha, reset the whole thing?? You have any idea how log it takes to re-set a highly intuitive camera, like an Olympus??

Might have to do this though although Olympus told me that this is how the camera operates. Might actually start with a newly formatted card and see what happens.

Yes, my E-P5 took 30 minutes to get back to where I wanted it after a warranty fix. That included the 4 MySets assigned to the Mode dial. I can do it from memory as I'm so used to being in the menus. For someone not used to the menus then add an hour to that for looking up things in the manual.

Yes, in some strange situations I have found particular cards to cause weird problems, so always a new or different card when testing.

What the heck? That is not support but the cleaning lady you contacted!

That File Name item set to Auto should do exactly what it does on all my Pens, increment the file numbers forever, even when a blank new card is inserted.

I guess you are correct I talked to the cleanign lady first explained my issue and then he (the cleaner!!) put me through (elevation of issue) to the tech support team, they grabbed a camera and tried to replicate the issue. With success, that is on their camera the counter went also back to 00000 when saving, deleting or whatever moving.

However, I found a solution that is good enough: I formatted the card(s) on my computer and tried the same thing again and this time the card counter carried on counting from the last saved files onward. It seems that the Pen gets confused when you use a card that has otherwise been used in a different camera. In this case the Fuji X-T1 ...

It now works but will pay attention and there won't b any more card swapping/sharing without first formatting the one for the Pen-F ...

Entertaining alright ...

Thanks for your help!

If you like that sort of entertainment!

Anyway, good find. In my case I have swapped cards between Ricoh/Casio/Panasonic/Olympus cameras with no harm done, but leaving a confusing mess of folders on the card at times.

I guess the lesson must be to always format a card in the target camera before starting to use it. Some cameras may be doing non-standard things on their card and the Fuji must be one of them.

Here is the Olympus Australia response:

"After checking with Olympus Japan and our test camera, we found that depending on what yo have selected depends how the photos are numbered.

You need to have selected AUTO in the menu under File Name. The numbers will continue and not restart.

If you have it on RESET, the numbers will reset every time you remove your memory card.

If this is not behaving correctly, then please reset your camera via your menu, as a FULL reset.

If that still does not work, then please take your camera back to the store as Olympus has a 14 day DOA period."

The much dreaded FULL reset suggested by them as well. For now I will just pay more attention to detail regarding SD cards.

Another thing I noticed reagrding the C1-C4 settings is that one needs to pay attention to the F stop you had in place when you save the custom settings e.g. when you accidentally have set this to F11 from a shoot, then this will ALWAYS go to F11 every time you chose those custom settings. In aperture priority mode that is!

Yup, they must read my posts. :-)

Anyway, they forgot to say that you should always format the card before using it in the camera to flush out any funnies left over from being in other cameras.

Yes indeed, Deed, when you save a MySet/Custom Setting, it saves exactly how the camera is set at that moment. So twist the dial for assigned MySets or to C1-4 and that saved setup is restored, warts and all.

Yes, it annoys me to see my bright 1.8 lens starts at f4

C mode does that to you from not paying attention

So now I set all my modes to the brightest aperture lens I own today f1.7

With a slower lens , the camera will automatically set the aperture to the lens brightest

Voila

Maybe 1 day I'll have to set it to f1.2 ... that day may come sooner than later

Cheers,
