I have printed many 8*10's from my G2 and been very happy with the results. I thought I would give a large print a try. I sent one of my favorite shots to Ophoto and had a 16*20 printed. I am very happy with the results. Here is a link to the picture I had printed, of course this one was sized for the web. Has everone else had good luck with large prints from their G2/G3?

I had a very large poster made from a G2 image into a 29 x 24 poster. I don't know how they made it into such a good print without pixelation but it came out very well. Only problem was the price. $65

Hi there.

Although they are not G2/G3s, I have had fantastic 16x20s printed from both the S50 and (believe it or not) the S30. I printed them myself, interpolating using the "stairstep" method of repeated bicubic interpolation in Photoshop. (I have done tests using other interpolation methods, but I've recently discovered that there is little visible difference unless you really start interpolating to larger sizes than this.) I then printed using an HP Designjet800ps we have at work (not the best equipment for the job, but I have easy access to it). People I know simply could not believe that three of these photos were taken with an S30. I am quite pleased with the results, and I am a pain in the @$$ when it comes to quality. :)

So I am not at all surprised that you had good results with your G2. Enjoy it, its a very nice camera.

Regards,
Brian

Thats a quality picture. A money in the bank picture.

I've had a couple of 12x18 (inches) prints made from my G2 at Costco with their Noritsu printer. I was amazed at the quality. I did no upsizing at all, and instead just let the printer's software do that work and it did a very good job.

12x18 for $2.99. What a bargain! This sure beats printing my own prints on the Epson.

I had Jumbogiant.com print a 16x20 for me. It came out very well. I had it framed and it's hanging on a wall now.

I get excellent prints on A4 borderless with my epson but I am curious, how large can u print on a home printer? I have never seen photo paper bigger than A4.

You usually need fewer rather than more pixels at you move beyond an 8X10. Why? Because you start standing further away so you don't see much detail. (Think billboard). An 8X10 or smaller you look at from arms length or shorter. Hence you can see more detail.

While not an exact science, the tug between needing more pixels because of the size print and fewer because you're standing further away, suggests the most pixels are needed at 8X10 since this is still arms lenght. Any larger and you start moving further away. And further. And further .......

A 16x20 hanging on the wall must be a special shot, would you mind sharing it?

My brother has an Epson that will print 13"x18" which he's done often. He shoots with an Oly E20.

I've done 20x24" prints with a 3 megapixel camera with pleasing results. The key is good subject matter and great composition. Steveg, your photo has these qualities... you can go as large as you wish!

In my opinion, 3 megapixels is the "magic" number. This is the minumum amount of image information that one needs to make pleasing prints of any size.

Cheers!

I tend to agree with that, for the most part. As long as you have sufficient resolution to define fine detail in your image, you can make very nice, very large prints (assuming quality interpolation). But exactly what defines "sufficient" depends on some things that are image-dependent; namely, the field of view, and the scene complexity. Very large prints made from a typical 3 megapixel camera will be nice as fields or view and scene complexity remain small (ie, as amount of fine detail remains small), but limitations will be noticable as fields of view and complexity increase (fine detail increases).

For example, I've recently been doing some large print testing using my S30 (3mp) and a borrowed S50 (5mp). While for most shots good results have been obtained with both cameras, in some cases the difference is striking. This is especially apparent in wide-angle landscapes with lots of foliage, for example, (large field of view, and lots of fine detail). It's in cases like that where the extra resolution really helps. By resolving much more detail, it simply gives the interpolation algorithm that much more to work with when upsizing to very large print sizes. (There's also the fact that less interpolation is required to reach a given print size at a given ppi.)

Having said that, however, I've still managed to get some very nice landscapes at 16x20 out of my S30, and have no plans to upgrade yet.

Just my thoughts on the subject...

regards,
Brian
