Hi all, this is my first post here, so excuse me if this has been covered, but I did my best to search through the the forums for anything on this and found nothing.

I've been using my D500 with my Sigma 150-600mm Sport for a couple weeks now and am experiencing an issue where the rear screen does not time out after reviewing images. This does not happen every time or even most of the time, but it happens to me at least one every time I shoot with this combination. Best as I can tell it happens after the camera has gone unused/inactive for at least 5 minutes, after which I fire off a series of bursts (i.e. bird in flight) and then review and zoom in on my captures. When I am done reviewing both the top and back screens remain active until I press another button on the camera. This is not an elongated time out issue as I've heard with other lenses due to the OS being activated (adds a minute to timers), the screen will now stay on until I turn off the camera, hit a button or let the battery run dead.

I've asked about this in other forums and contacted Sigma Tech Support and, as yet, I've yet to hear of anyone who has experienced the same thing. Has anyone here experienced this?

Having played with this for a couple weeks I'm wondering if it has anything to do with customized OS settings since I have both my C1 & C2 banks on the lens set for the other OS and focusing options. I shoot most of the time in C2 which I have set for focus accuracy and Dynamic View OS, and as far as I can remember this has only happened with these settings - but I don't know that I've changed them (I'm going to start experimenting).

The other potential factors that may differentiate my use from others' is that I have After Burst Show set to First Shot in Series, I generally have my playback window set so it shows the image in the top left corner, histogram to the right, and setting details at the bottom, and the center button of my multi-selector is set to 100% zoom and is usually the first thing I press once I am in image review.

If anyone has any insight they can share I'd be grateful to hear it as I'm stymied by this and likely will not get a lot of help from Sigma until I can give them an actual set of steps under which I can faithfully cause this to happen.

Thanks in advance.

Jake

You did not mention if the problem occurs with that particular Sigma only. Have you tried with any other lens?

Can you try with another lens?

I don't have that lens myself, but others do and I have not noticed any report like that.

Some cameras, some lenses, some computers

So what was Sigma's reply?

Generally Sigma will update the firmware on newer lenses for free, and if you send in ANY Sigma lens, they will evaluate it for you and then quote you what it will cost to update (older) lenses. They have an online form on their website.

This is probably not the same issue. But there is a de-powering issue with Sigma lenses (perhaps just some) that I discussed with Thom Hogan and he wrote about recently in his Blog.

My D500 is set to turn off the light meter if it senses the absence of any other camera operations for six seconds (this can be set for different durations in menu item C2). However, with my brand new Sigma 17-50mm F/2.8 attached, the light meter didn't turn off for about 66 seconds.

Turns out that when the camera is turned on (or when the light meter is activated by a half-press of the shutter after being off for a while) the lens powers up its optical stabilization function to bring the stabilizing element into a ready position. It is programmed to not de-power for about sixty seconds. Only after the lens de-powers the image stabilization and returns it to a "travel" status (I can actually hear a soft "clunk"), does the six second countdown begin for the camera to shut off the light meter.

Sigma tells me that the lens firmware cannot be reprogrammed to something other than the sixty second delay. And this powering up of the image stabilization element occurs even if the image stabilization function is switched to "off".

Thanks for the quick replies. Filling in the blanks...

It only happens with this lens, not any of my Nikons and none of my other Sigmas (24-35mm, 15mm fish, 105mm macro).

Sigma's reply was that they wanted as many details as I could give them and that they would be forwarding it on to their engineers in Japan. I'm up to date on the firmware on the lens (I can apply it via the USB Dock) and I expect that if and when they figure this out the fix will be applied that way.

This is different from the issue with the 17-50mm, something I spoke about with Sigma, in that issue is a matter of the two system timers being additive and things eventually will turn off. In this case the review screen never turns off no matter how long I wait. That's not to say that there isn't something related to the OS system. I can hear the OS system stop, but that doesn't mean that something isn't getting miscommunicated to the camera by the OS system. Like the rear screen the metering system remains active as well, so there may be some relation, but it only happens during image review/playback and not any other time.

As Thom said in his Blog, at least Sigma talks to its customers about issues, seems to be forthright about what it does know, and seems genuinely interested in trying to track down a solution. We can only dream about what it would be like if Nikon reacted similarly.

I went out on the deck to shoot some with the D500 and the 70-200mm f4 today and after about 20 minutes something made me think about a Kenko 2X teleconverter I had sitting in a drawer. I decided to put that on there and, wouldn't you know it, the same thing happened - image review stays on until I hit a button. It happened 4 times over the course of an hour of shooting. No rhyme or reason as to when it would and wouldn't happen, but it happened.

This tells me that the 150-600mm is not the problem, at least not specifically. I'd done a lot of shooting with the 70-200mm without the TC and never experienced this, so I'm now thinking that it's the D500 not playing well with 3rd party gear.

I plan on calling Nikon and asking about this, but I fully expect (and will be disgusted by) the answer, "Nikon recommends you only use Nikon lenses on your D500". I get that, but it's really not realistic in the real world, and certainly anything but customer friendly.

I'll keep you posted on what I find, and I may play with the TC and other lenses as well as I have time.

Can confirm the screen issue happens to me. Mostly with my Sigma 24-105mm F4.

Rarely with my 150-600mm Contemporary.

I even decided to turn it off a few hours ago after experiencing changes in the image caused by my own stomach rubbing the screen (thru my shirt lol)

Note that I had set the timeout to 5 seconds, but it stays longer. I was thinking it was because of the sensitive touchscreen. But now, after hearing the 60 seconds thing.. makes sense.. since both lenses I have have OS.
