Thanks to everyone who recommended this one, I think this fits the bill perfectly for a cheapish walk about lens, just in time for my trip to Toronto next week :) I'm surprised by the zoom, it's pretty snappy! Typical Tamron grinding noise, but atleast it's fast, much much faster than the SP 90mm macro lens.

Here are some brief initial tests, f2.8 is pretty unusable, f4 maybe in a pinch:

As you can see it's from the top left hand corner:

Seems to have a nice bokeh too! This was taken about 13" away, pretty much the closest focus distance:

More later...

I just got the lens yesterday, and am very happy with it. I compared the Tamron to my Nikon 28-105, and the Tamron is sharper. The lens is sharp at all f/ stops and the f/2.8 is really nice in low light. I am pretty particular when it comes to lenses and this one makes the grade. Ken

Small world, I lived just off Thornhill drive in Montclair until March when I moved out before a 3 month business trip abroad. I miss the neighbourhood sorely, it's just lovely up there.

This was taken from the San Carlos hills on the south peninsula looking northwest towards Treasure Island and Oakland...

Are you in the area?

Cheers,

that's why I got it, and it does the job splendidly.
Hmmm, one would get a 2,8 lens for low light... Now if this lens is - as you say - "unuseable" at 2,8, where is the purpose of getting it? Its zoom range is ratehr small, compared to other lenses.

Other posters have said however its good at all apertures... your samples in the first message of this thread dont look like that. What focal length was that made at?

I have ordered one, will get it in the next days, but if its too bad wider than f 5,6 I will send it back.

regards Bernie

Even if you can't use it at 2.8 for shooting ( I don't have one so I don't know), there is more light for focusing which can make a big difference in focusing speed and accuracy.

as bp said and also, it's decent at f4 and pretty damn good from f5.6, will you get the same with a f4 maximum aperture lens? probably not...

it was shot at 75mm, which according to another poster to this thread, is significantly worse than

i very seldom shoot at less than f4, or even f5.6 and thus far have found the lens more than admirable for what i've used it for and the price paid.
