Hello everyone!

I’ve been lurking around the Sony forum for the last few weeks to get some info on the F717. I currently own a Fuji S602 (since last summer) and to be quite honest… have not been all that impressed with it. Yes, it does have a nice zoom, is very fast for speed shots along with the other “bells & whistles”. However, indoor shot quality is far less than stellar (IMO) and in general the shots just don’t have that zing that I had hoped for. I am certainly not a professional photographer by any stretch of the imagination – I don’t know an F-stop from a bus stop and don’t want to at this point in time. Sure, I’ve fiddled around with the manual settings on the camera and yeah -- have gotten some great pictures (and ALOT of just.. bizzare other ones but that is just something I don’t want to have to do every single time I take a pic as it ruins the fun of just taking a picture!!

With that said, I went out and bought a F717 yesterday at Circuit City (matched CompUSA’s sale price!) and brought that bad boy home and have been snapping pictures ever since. All I can say is !!!!! WOW !!!!! It is just about impossible NOT to take a wonderful picture! I’ve done side by side comparison shots (nothing scientific!) with the help of a friend and I have to say that this is one sweet camera. I like taking a lot of indoor pictures and it seemed that the Fuji, short of having a 10,000 watt light bulb in the room, just wouldn’t focus whereas the Sony locked on 99.9% of the time. (Side note… the holo laser focus assist is pretty darn freaky at first until you get used to it!) The out door pictures I have taken are superb as the color seems spot on, the focus is great and the pics have that “pizzazz” that I couldn’t get with the Fuji. I'm actually looking forward to taking pictures again!!

The only immediate negative thing that I would have to say about the camera is the smallish button in the center of the arrow keys on the back – rather difficult to press it just the right way but other than that… the size or shape of it doesn’t bother me that much. Sure, it is an odd-shaped beastie (and already has gotten quite a few looks from people!) but it feels solid and IMO isn't a burden to hold while taking pictures if you are used to a larger camera in general.

Sorry for the long post everyone but I am just so incredibly happy that an average F-STOP clueless person like myself can once again take great pictures!!! Thanks to everyone for posting the information that they do on here as y'all have alot of information to offer and it is certainly appreciated by individuals like myself! Who knows, maybe if I read enough on here I may try to learn about that F-Stop thingee (GRIN!)

The best testimony from a F717 owner that I have read. I share your joy (1 month F717 owner).

Hello everyone!
Hi, Mike. It's always nice to see another satisfied 717 user.
It really does take nice pictures in "lazy boy" mode but you'll
be surprised at the things you can do when you familiarize
yourself with all of the features and some of the basics of
photography. Your assignment for today: learn what an
f-stop is!

Enjoy your camera.

Steve

The small button in the middle of the 4-way navigator button is just a place to press to push down all 4 sides at the same time; there's no "center switch", if that helps. Press pretty firmly to get all 4 to switch together.

Give yourself a few months and you'll be whipping through those menus and formating without even thinking about how to properly press that middle circle button :-)

You are right about this camera. Not only does it take great shots. It's such a joy to shoot with that it makes you shoot more. Mine whispers to me all the time, "Yo,...let's go shoot a few sticks?".......lol

I hope you all continue to enjoy your fine DC and post some shots when you can.

Steve
I agree with you! This camera is amazing. And the best thing is: It
so damn fast!!!! I've had this camera for about a month now. Check

Steven:

I'll admit I came to this conclusion from logic, not actual knowledge:
(1) You can't press down on the middle without actuating all 4 "switches".

(2) A simple "AND" circuit or program statement can cause some action to take place if and only if all 4 switches are closed.

(3) Digital or program logic can also control what happens if any two adjacent switches are closed. (See Note (1) below

(4) Digital/program implementation is much cheaper and more reliable than a mechanical arrangement.

Note (1): At present my memory stick contains a movie preceded and followed by still images. When I select the movie, the center push plays the movie, the left/right arrows select the previous/following image. The up/down arrows adjust the volume of the movie sound. I find that if I press the button so BOTH the up and right switches are closed, the next image is selected. If I push to close both the left and down switches, the down volume function results. To me, that means Sony's firmware is interpreting these clumsy pushes so's to avoid trouble. This is more evidence that only 4 mechanical switches are present, with firmware (involving timing) interpreting their states.

As a retired EE, that's how I'd have implemented it, so I assume Sony does it that way.

(You weren't kidding, were you?!)

Russ & all....

Thanks for the info on the 4way navigator (couldn't think of the name for that thing to save my life).. just arrived home a bit ago and just pushed the bloody thing without "trying" to get the center and it worked great! I was worried that I would have to whittle my fingers down a bit

This weekend is going to be a big test for the camera as I am taking it out and about around sunny (er, RAINY lately) Florida and shoot to my heart's content!!! Ya'll just wouldn't believe how excited I am at the thought of being able to take great pictures again! I feel like a little kid who just opened the world's best Christmas present!

I do have a question regarding the laser assist focusing system. Is the camera still able to focus fairly well (efficiently) beyond the range of that system?

Also, for those of you interested... I found out that http://www.insidecomputer.com does sell a "5 in 1 compact flash adapter" that lists memory stick pro compatibility. I ordered it today and by the time I got home had already received a notice that it had shipped with the Fed-Ex tracking number! That was a concern of mine since I have a Digital Wallet and an Archos Jukebox and needed a way to keep using them with the new MS Pro media.. After buying this awsome camera I didn't realy wanna spend a whole lot money on new media at this time.

Happy shooting all!

Thanks for the post. I bought a 717 yesterday at Sears for 799. After reading your post on Compusa's price I printed their 719 price from their website. Sears refund the difference plus 10% today. Enjoy your camera. I think the 717 is the best all-around camera on the market today.

Russ,

My apologies. The way I read your statment above, I thought
you were saying that pressing the button in the center has no
function. Also, it seemed that you were saying there is a reason
one would want to activate the flash, macro, timer and last-image
buttons simultaneously. I now see that you were saying that it
is a four-position switch with the center function being logically
actuated when the four switches are pressed together. That
makes perfect sense.

Sorry for being a bit dense!

Steve

Yeah, those things are very hard to find. I was thinking of getting a disk storage device, but the need for one of these threw me off. The one you found is kind of expensive, so I did a quick search and came up with another one:

oops. That's how I understood it too. It makes more sense to me that the middle button 'shortcuts' all of the other 4 buttons.

No offence taken, Russ!
