Hello all,

I am a nikon fx shooter, I shoot a d610 and d750 with only primes, frequently using the following 20mm 1.8, 35mm 1.8, 85mm 1.8, 105mm micro 2.8, and 180mm 2.8.

I am looking to see what canon has going on and am looking into a canon full frame body to compete with my nikons.

I understand that canon has "better skin tones" or so Ive heard. I have no experience with any canon dslrs. Any pertinent insight on other significant differences to be aware of? I would be using it with the canon 85mm 1.8 usm lens mostly.

What canon primes are up to snuff with my current nikon offerings? Preferably one wider (24-35mm) and one longer (135-200mm)

I assume my canon options are the 5d mark 2, 5d mark 3, and 6d. Does canon have any other full frame models to consider? Im looking at the $1000 used price range.

Thanks!

theNikon cameras you have will best the canon's you are looking to add to your lineup.Canon is behind the 8 ball for some time now since the D3. Why not rent a canon before buying or bring a Cf card to your local camera and shoot a few frames in the store, bring em home and examine on your computer.Just not worth it at this time. COME ON CANON CATCH UP!!!! the Canons have backfired BOOM!

better skin tones??? hmmmm. ...what type of skin colour is the op talking about?

is the op referring to a studio situation with controlled lighting?

white balance has the biggest impact on skin tones and in the canons i have white balance can vary enormously.

Im surprised, you have the D750 as i do, i had the canon 6D from the start, then the 5D3 and 7Dmk2 i loved them them all, the 6D was great at low light high Iso was the best, i wanted more DR, so i went over to Nikon to give the d750 a go. I have been using the the D750 for about 6 months, and without bias i must say the files are cleaner than my canons, i love canon and always will, but for now the D750 is pleasing me in more ways than canon FF.

Just stick with Nikon.
Put your money in savings until another Nikon big body comes out and maybe get it.

Rather bizarre request. You want a camera to compete with your Nikons...why? You've heard the skin tones are better?

I'd stay with the gear you have...you will gain nothing by changing.

Only the 5d mark II and 6d bodies will align with your price requirement. Adding good primes will cost even more. I've heard the claims that canon renders skin tones better before also, but I also find adjusting white balance and custom settings on a case by case basis to be good practice. I understand the grass is greener on the other side yadda yadda yadda... But really, rent the body and lenses for your comparison tests instead of buying into a second system you might not stick with. On the plus side, if you're dead set on making a purchase, look for a good deal and your resale value won't really suffer after your testing is complete. Well, unless the 5d mark iv or the 6d mark II come out before the testing period is over.

Are you solely comparing skin tone rendering or do you have some other tests in mind?

Well, to be honest, I grew up shooting minnolta and canon film bodies, when I went digital I went with nikon and have always wondered if that was the right choice. I am happy with nikon but as a consumer I wondered if I should explore the competition...

That said, I feel like you guys have successfully swayed my to not bother. I highly doubt that canon will tempt me enough to justify switching completely, and I really don't want to run 2 different systems unless there is a real justifiable reason to do so.

So it looks like I will be staying put squarely in the Nikon camp. Thanks for your upfront and honest opinions.

Thanks all!

geenoz is referring to Canon's Dynamic Range performance, which admittedly is behind Sony/Nikon. However the OP wants Canon's skin tones, which are known to be superior. This implies portrait use, where DR isn't as important. If he needs the DR, he already has Nikon.

For about $1000 used, I'd look to the 6D rather than the 5D2. Just a newer camera with a sensor that is a hair better than the 5D3's.

Unless you are looking to use a few specific Canon EOS lenses that have no Nikkor equivalent, WHY?

The color rendition between Nikon and Canon has long been discussed. Nikons are a bit cooler and neutral, Canons are a hair warmer and juicier. This was true even back in the film days--I think it might have more to do with the optical design and lens coatings than anything else.

As others suggested it is a good idea to rent a camera body and lens for a week if you want to compare them. $1000 isn't going to get you very far if you want to buy a halfway decent body. I suggest a 5D III or 6D.

You seem to favor primes, but one thing Canon has excelled at are it's recent high-end zooms. Most are as good as or superior to fixed lenses at the expense of speed. I'd rent a 16-35 f/4L IS or 24-70 f/2.8L II if you really want to see what this stuff can do. Or fool around with the new 11-24 f/4L if you want to get your mind blown.

At this point in time, I would think the 5Ds R is the only Canon body that a Nikon shooter would find compelling, as an additional system. Until the introduction of the D500, the 7D Mark II, for birds and wildlife, would have been another reason. The next generation of Canon cameras could change this equation, or, not.

For a frame of reference, I regularly use 7D Mark II and 5Ds R Canon bodies, and D700 and D3s Nikon bodies. It is specific lenses, made by each manufacturer, that ensure I am unlikely to ever settle upon one brand.

Yes, Canon does have very nice default OOC JPEGs, which is a major reason I shoot most of my crime scene/evidentiary/forensic images with my 7D Mark II cameras. I cannot post-process any of my images shot in the course of my public duties. JPEGs must be uploaded from a memory card, or directly from the camera. (APS-C is the norm for this type of photography.)

Regarding lenses, this, of course, is a reason to run two systems, as each has something the other does not. This might be better discussed in a different thread, in the Canon SLR Lens section of the forums.
