Sony A6300 vs. Panasonic Gh4

Could you possibly make a comparison of Sony A6300 vs. Panasonic Gh4? I was ready to pull the trigger (Gh4) and I wonder what you have to say about this new mirrorless announced by Sony today. Thanks!

.

Would be totally pointless and futile to compare the two at this point in time. Have you seen one single actual review of the camera yet? The answer is no.

One cannot even pre-order it yet. It is at least a month or more away from shipping to stores.

This is your first and only post on dpreview? Don't you own and use any camera currently? This would not be a good camera for a beginning photographer/videographer.

I would advise that you wait two more months, before making your decision. There will be numerous formal reviews, and many more users reviews of the camera out by then.

I was very happy that Sony eventually released an affordable large sensor 4K camera. I was reluctant to buy a GH4 so far, because it was too expensive, too big for the size of the sensor, and couple of major problems I have with m43 cameras:
  • No auto ISO in Manual exposure in movie mode. Sony and Nikon DSLRs (Nikon 1 has terrible auto ISO implementation) has brilliant auto ISO in M; Canon has aded decent auto ISO to M in its recent cameras 7Dii, 1DXii (but not in the XC, weird)
  • No magnification in MF mode during video recording.
  • No phase detect AF point on sensor; CAF during video is pretty unusable because of constant and abrupt hunting
  • Low light performance is inferior vs APS-C/FF Sony/Samsung/Nikon cameras.
I hope these severe limitaions will be easily corrected in GH5. I don't understand why Panasonic hasn't added most of these with firmware updates?

These limitations were not compensated to me by the myriads of advantages:
  • Excellent touch operability
  • Excellent wireless application to control the camera remotely
  • Tilt EVF on the GX8
  • 4K video, and so on and forth.
On the other hand I am a bit disappointed with the A6300 because of these major reasons:
  • No touch screen to operate efficiently the focus points for touch-to-auto-focus pull. It is meaningless to add 425 PD AF points when I have no interface (touch screen or joystick) to move and select the focus point efficiently. Of course, face tracking works brilliantly, but to select the face to track when multiple faces are shown on the screen, here a touch screen would be indispensable.
  • No headphone jack to monitor audio; even the expensive Sony XLR module has no headphone jack, hilarious.
  • No IBIS
Otherwise, the A6300 must be excellent.

I confirm :-)

It makes no sense to compare a well-known GH4 with a total unknown A6300.

And the microjitter on the GH4 kept me from getting one.

But Sony makes these cameras that are so close to a home run but not a home run.

Agree with your concerns on the A6300.

We'll have to see how it plays out as people get them in their hands.

I've seen some other places mention that it does indeed have the lame 30-minute recording time limit.

To be fair, that's a lens issue, not a camera issue.
Well the problem is that I have only one lens the, 7-14, that it wouldn't be an issue on.

It would be an issue on the 14-42, 14-140, and 100-300 that I have.

They really shouldn't have built a system were most of their own lenses have the problem.

And to top it off it doesn't go away if you turn off IS.

And the focus on the GH4 is way slower in video than it is on my GH2s.

So I just use the Panasonic lenses I have on my Blackmagic Pocket Camera for now.

I own a GH4 and tested the Sony A6300 briefly.

Apart from the fact the body shut down for overheating after 24 minutes (What the hell?) while I was shooting a conference. The sony A6300 has two big advantages over the GH4:

1) Low light ability is tremendous

2) Slog 3 = dynamic range

It Kills the GH4 on both issues.
