Has anyone found a good way to import Sony 4K XVAC-S video (from Sony A7Rii) directly to an iPad Pro?
I know it hasn't worked for sometime, but I am hoping someone found the right adapter or setting to make this work. I purchased an iPad Pro partially for editing 4K video from my Sony A7Rii on the fly. Unfortunately, it does not seem to work. I have purchased the new camera kit and the latest Apple cables, and it still will not work.

I know it works with iPhone 4k video and importing to a mac and then transferring to iPad, but I am hoping to find a solution to import directly into the iPad.

Thank you in advance for any tips!

Are you using the Lightning to USB adapter or the Lightning to SD card reader? Some googling showed that most people were importing XAVC-S footage into their iPads using the Lightning to USB adapter.

I hear you on the MS Surface....I love my iPad Pro, but I wish it could do more "Pro" tasks. I am really enjoying the new lightroom enhancements to their app. Overall, I like the workflow of the iPad, iPhone, and iMac. Although, I was tempted with the last MS Surface.

XAVC-S, even if based on popular h.264 is a proprietary codec that requires licensing. Chances are close to nil that a consumer device will license it.

So no it won't work, and it's unlikely it ever will.

If you want to view your 4K footage on the iPad Pro, which I too have and enjoy, you need to shoot video with another camera brand such as Panasonic which uses a different recording format. My A7RII takes better video, but my wife likes me to use the Panasonic so we can look at the footage each evening.

Yeah, it still doesn't work with the usb 3 camera adapter. What a bummer. I may get a new camera (which sounds ridiculous) so I can use it with iPad Pro. Honestly, I use the iPad much more than a computer these days. I will wait and see what the new Canon 5D Mark IV has in store, since I already own some Canon glass.

It is possible to import 4K Sony A7s footage directly into an iPad Pro but the process requires a few extra steps and a 3rd party SD card reader.

As you know, Apple doesn't directly support the XAVC-S file structure (as of iOS10) so you can't use the Apple SD Card reader. The Apple USB adapter is problematic because of power issues between the iPad and the camera.

However, using a 3rd part lightning to SD card reader does work.

Here's what I do:

I bought an "iReader" Lightning to SD card reader made by YKSH from Amazon.com. I'm sure there are others but this was $20 and had 4.5 star rating. It's kind of like Apple's SD reader.

The trick to the process is the card reader needs an app that supports file browsing through all folders on an SD card. It also needs to be able to copy files to the camera roll on the iPad.

I plug the SD card into the reader then plug the reader into the iPad. Launch the app (in this case, it's called iDiskk Pro) then navigate to PRIVATE/M4ROOT/CLIP subfolder. This is where the XAVC-S 4K files are stored (they're saved as MP4 files). I select the files I want to import then add them to the camera roll.

From there, you can use the files like any other video on the iPad...view them, import them into iOS iMovie, etc. Works well and the reader is pretty fast at copying.

I have an iPad Pro 12" but also tried on my iPad Air 2 and it worked.

This works like a charm.....thank you so much!!!! Finally, a solution for this issue.

Thank you so much for solving this issue. I have the a7rii and have been temted for a long time to get the ipad pro, but didnt since no one knew how to import the heavy 4k videos!

This is the right interface - right?

What app are you using for the edit?

any tipps on workflow and export of the project to imac?

thank you!!!

I can speak for the sonyrx100v to iPad Pro 10.5.I used the technique in the YouTube short video explaining how to do it.I used the uxb3 to lightning power adapter and connected it to the micro usb to usb cable provided with the camera with the micro usb connected to the camera port. The usb3 lightning is connected to the iPad Pro.Turn off the cameras usb power on to off and select the MPT file.At first there was a gremlin which I removed by powering off the iPad for about 10 mins and powering back on.

The videos transferred just as shown in the u tube video.I guarantee this works

However do connect the usb3 to lightning socket to a power adapter, which comes with iPad.Otherwise the battery in the camera will be drained in seconds
