Falun Dafa and the columns of St Martin-in-the-Fields
Falun Dafa and the columns of St Martin-in-the-Fields

I find the "alleged violation of 5-foot rule" the strongest image visually - but I understand the series is first of all documentary.

Without getting into politics, it is sad that this type of events cannot take place without violence...

Great photo, great light. I think it would have been even better if you had taken from a lower angle.

Thanks

Paul

i like how you've lined up the car and included the capitol bldg in the bg--that definitely conveys a sense of reaching out, possibly ineffectually, to get a message across. i have less of an idea what the message or messenger might be, due to the angle, but the peace symbol stands in fairly well for all that.

the vertical frame is an interesting choice--i think i would have been horizontal.

lew, in the future it works much better if you post your picture in direct reply to the first post in the thread. that makes it an independent branch that is easier for other people to find and comment on, and it doesn't look like a reply to another comment. thanks!

i wonder if you can be more specific about what effect you would be looking for in shooting from a lower angle? for instance, from a lower angle, the 'anything' of the sign would be blocked, and her head would no longer be set off against the blank pavement; also, the three circular masses (2 tires + her head) wouldn't line up any longer. those are some of the considerations i had in choosing the angle. what effects of a lower pov would you want to see? are any of the 'outtakes' in the second post above (some from a lower angle) more what you would have wanted to see, or not? i'm genuinely curious, fwiw--i always like to hear what other people are seeing in a picture i am looking at.

thanks for the comment-

i like the low-angle light and the expression--i know cropping isn't something you like, but i think coming down and in from the right might improve the balance. (otoh, if i were able to move the camera, i think that placing the figure a little lower and to the left, while possible pulling back, would be even better--get him out of the not-quite zone of centered/off-center, and allow a space from which the light can hit him and his umbrella--which might give the light more impact.

Regardless of his sort of sour face, this man was pleasant, friendly and quite proud of his collection of lawn animals. I have him a print of this picture and he said he would put it in his man-cave.

certainly this is intended as a documentary series--i hope that the particular shots have compositional interest as well, of course. glad you enjoyed the 5-foot shot--

i agree that it is a shame when so many people are eager for violence, though it's possible to trace back reasons for it on various sides. i haven't posted this set to make a political statement, though. just a photographic view of things that happened.

thanks again-

i admit to being a bit fuzzy on this 'game', but isn't there supposed to be a wicket involved somewhere?

(having just spent 12 minutes on wikipedia i will never get back reading about cricket, i suppose that should be bails?)

i like the concept to this a lot. i think it would be even better if the tops of the stumps were outlined on the sky, and/or the bg behind them a bit cleaner.

the sticker works well, and the white pants which draw the highlights down from the sky.

well, i would be willing to bet that is an unusual collection. though when i lived in the netherlands, i stumbled upon a collection of garden gnomes that could be seen from space. not figuratively--i found the yard subsequently on google earth.

i like the use of the chain-link fence along the bottom edge. i wonder a bit about the processing--i think the highlights seem a bit too bright on the face and brow, which is giving the figure a slightly punched-out look on my screens. the seagull on the right offers a potential echo of the man's shoulders, and the rest of the scene is quite quirky and interesting.

This is such great timing and the tilt suits the picture too. Wish you had a title for this though to know your what you were thinking!

Chewing gum or dog poo? Wouldn't enjoy either :-)

Edit - just saw your caption...sorry I missed it!
