I'm looking forward to the day when people don't have to carry around huge cameras and we can all shoot with small mirrorless/ compact sized cams, which produce exactly the same photo quality and sizes as current DSLRs!

I would love the quality of shots from a full framed but just hate seeing 'non-pros' carrying them around(and yes you can usually tell!). Imagine in 10 years or so, everyone will have a tiny camera and be taking top quality shots!

Discuss- I look forward to all the expertise in advance!

Just for the curiosity, why do you care what kind of equipment other people carry around? If someone is satisfied to carry and operate the bulkiest DSLR they can find, good for them. If someone else is happy with APS-C DSLR, a smaller mirrorless camera, a compact, a smartphone or a vintage film camera, again good for them, but personally it matters far more to me that I'm happy with my own photographic set of tools :)

Always nice to have the option but umm.......current DSLRs aren't that big. There re some that would argue they are the perfect size for the average man's hands(sexist world) the big fast lenses seem to be the tippingpoint

Ummmm it isnt perfect but have you heard ofthe a7. There is a physical limit to how small a full frame sensor can go
but just hate seeing 'non-pros' carrying them around
This bothers you why? Do you really care that much? It is their life. Maybe focus on your own
(and yes you can usually tell!)
I am usually paying attention to other things. "Photographers" only seem to catch my eye when they are being jerks

We have definitely come a long way in the past 10

Expertise......you made an observation and then pontificated about how you wish the world fitinto some predetermined ideal you have. I would say focus on your subject and worry less about everyone else

I don't care what other people carry around, why do you?

Why dont just look forward to the day YOU dont have to carry around huge DSLRs? With respect!

I kinda like a beefy camera, as the ergonomics are great! I also like shooting with my wifes nex-6, as it is a great camera, but it gets a bit tiresome in the long run as the camera is a little too small for my hands.

If this is going to happen its going to need to come from improvements in smaller sensors and lenses to exploit them(even then DOF control would be lost) as lens size will mean larger sensors always come as a large overall package if you want descent range/speed.

Besides that of course you have handling issues that mean many want a larger body that can be gripped more easily with space for lots of larger controls.

I do think 1 inch sensor compacts will become an increasingly large market.

Fair point- It's only my opinion- obviously people are free to do what they want.

My main point is - it will be better when no one has to carry around large cameras in the future.

I do not want toy sized cameras. I do not want toy sized cameras... Did you catch it?

I have no problems with mirrorless when eventually it is good enough to go to mainstream cameras, but I do not want toy sized camera.

Did I mention I do not want toy sized cameras?

Regards,

If you are still in your teens I suggest a career in merchant banking for you.

If you you are older than that, well there is no hope.

the larger body will always produce a better average shot
than an average shot from a small body.
I refer you to the principle of moments
and some basic Newton regarding mass for starters.
Add to that, the better ergonomics will have flow on effects.
My next will be full size again, hopefully an A99Mk2.

Better for whom? It certainly won't be better for me. I don't like tiny cameras. I don't like huge cameras. My APS-C DSLR is the perfect size for me. I see no reason why the marketplace can't accommodate your preferences alongside my preferences alongside other people's preferences. I use the equipment of my choice, you use the equipment of your choice, other people use the equipment of their choice. It's win-win-win.

That day is already here, and has been for several years now. Small cameras with APS-C sensors arrived in 2010.

I look forward to the day when folks are completely satisfied with their own choice of camera, and at the same time respect that someone else is happy with a different choice.

Being as this is, in fact, a gear-head forum I guess that's asking too much.

I rather doubt this. It is usually possible with modern sensors to use shutter speeds that are high enough to avoid the effects of camera movement, and in any case most cameras nowadays have some form of stabilisation.

But this routine shot was taken with a small camera that has no stabilisation, yet I think if you view it at 1:1 you will not see any ill effects from camera movement. (And I have hundreds more hand held shots from the same camera which are equally sharp.)

The ergonomics are best on whatever camera you find easiest to use. That could be a big camera for some people and a small one for others.

Those of us who have long experience of using cameras of all sizes can generally manage perfectly well with any of them.
My next will be full size again, hopefully an A99Mk2.

Volunteer, what could possibly go wrong ?

you can argue specifics till the cows come home,
but that won't change the basics.

For the day people will not judge other people's needs.

Why not- because you won't be able to differentiate yourself from the majority?

Who cares how big it is if it does the job.

Eventually everyone will be able to take DSLR quality photos on small devices- so enjoy your big camera while you can.

Every other week another expert has to come along telling his version of what is right.

Odd they do not notice that folk come in different sizes and that someone that uses a long tele needs a camera larger than another only using compact lenses.

Anyway, from now on all shoes should come in size 42 only.
