Well, it'll fire once in maybe 30 tries. Is anyone else having this issue?

It will fire fine if I lower the power to half or less. But when I have it at full power it really won't cooperate.

This is making the flash unusable for daytime outdoor flash photography.

Anyone have any tips?

I returned it. I'm hoping it was defective and thinking of ordering another. What about you?
because not one person wanted to help me I spent forever finding a solution. It needs a firmware upgrade. It can only be done by a nissin authorised center.
There is no way to do this on your own? Or check the version of the software?
nope. they have to do it.
Wow that's idiotic. Where I live (southeastern Michigan) there is probably not an "authorized center" for 100s of miles.

Ordered a new one from Amazon, and this one seems to work fine.
that's because you'd have one with the newer firmware this time :)

Solution
Yeah makes me feel a little bit better that I don't have to shell out the money for a phottix mitros+ and the Odin transmitter

Sigh the stupid thing stopped working and now is doing the exact same thing where it will not fire at full power in manual mode during high speed sync. How did you find the Nissin authorized distributor near you? Because on their website I only see one in the US so unless you happen to be near it I guess I'm out of luck. I'm going to wait for your response but most likely I think I'm going to return it and get the phottix mitros+ and the Odin transmitter.

where are you located?

Michigan. I already talked to them. They would need me to send it to their new Hampshire office. I grabbed a phottix mitros+ for now. We'll see how it goes with it.

I actually think I am gonna return mine too. While the firmware fixed the full power problem, the unreliable flash firing problems annoy me. I shoot interiors and I can shoot 4 times and the flash will fire differently 4 different times.. its so erratic and misfires way too often.

there is new sony triggers coming and new mitros too I think. maybe I will wait

Hm that's weird - I've shot my di700a full power in high speed sync, and didn't have any issues with the flash itself. Though I did learn somewhat painfully that it will cause banding if you don't turn off electronic first curtain shutter when shooting at shutter speeds high enough to warrant HSS

The guy at Minox told me that it was a small set of the flashes that were produced at the end of 2015 that have this issue and need the firmware upgrade. So you probably got one that already had the firmware upgrade applied or did not need it to begin with

There is a new mitros? I thought there was a new Odin transmitter coming for Sony but I did not hear of the flash being renewed, can you give me a link or anything?

Ah got it. Very interesting - did you end up having to send it back to get the firmware updated? Or is it user update-able?

Can't update it by yourself. It has to be sent in. So I decided to just not deal with it and return it to the seller and get myself a Phottix Mitros+

Ah got it. I'm thinking about swapping my travel speedlite setup to all godox myself. The Nissin has been ok, but I like that the godox triggers can also be used with their awesome AD600 monolight

i am not sure.. the guys at b&h are the best to ask, I was under the believe it was a whole system but may only be triggers.

Might be worth mentioning that I had reliability issues with the Di700a and Air 1 Commander until I switched to Eneloop batteries.
