Adobe Elements for Oly ORF / JPG files?

I found PSP X8 to be a better option until Google decided to give away the Nik tools! Then I was frustrated because somewhere between PSP X8 and X5 they moved away from the Adobe Plug-in model and now those plug-ins won't run! I believe PSP X5 could use the Nik Plug-ins but that's really old.
Way back, maybe at PSP X5 Ultimate I got the Nik Colour Efex Pro 3 "freebie" included. That same plugin now is copied nicely to the 32 bit version of PSP X8 and works fine.
Really? It wouldn't install for me if I didn't install X5 and Corel wouldn't point me to any sources showing support for Adobe Plug-ins, only plug-ins specific for their system.
In the end, I cracked and bought a subscription to Photoshop / Lightroom. I really wish somebody would smarten the hell up and come out with an app that competes with Adobe but that's not going to happen anytime soon.
Ummm, any of Capture One or DxO do a better job. Even the expensive Silkypix is no slouch. I trialled all of them and preferred those three over Lightroom. I use DxO.

For a super fast converter have a trial of Corel Aftershot 2 or Pro 2 (The plain jane Lite version arrived for me with a PSP update, works pretty well and is so darn fast). It used to be the highly regarded Bibble until Corel bought it and at first ruined it but now seems better. http://www.aftershotpro.com/en/products/aftershot/pro

I never use the lightroom piece beyond creating the camera profiles. Photoshop is the point where competition is limited and Adobe ACR in PhotoShop works fine for my purposes.

...was actually my first choice, having used Bibble way back when. The trial version kept crashing (Win10) while importing files, and I found the file management to be lacking. I ended up uninstalling it.

So you don't have to 'import', but then how do photos appear in the 'Catalog' that it recommends you build? (When I first installed, it recommended I do this and it took an hour to 'import' / index ~1500 files.)

It builds the catalog entry on the fly the minute you do something that requires writing to the database. This has been a feature of ACDSee since ACDSee 4 around the year 2001 or so. The technology is very mature and works well.

The feature to auto build the catalog is entirely voluntary. Some people prefer to build the catalog right from the start some do not. ACDSee tries to be as flexible as possible when it can. For example ACDSee will let you choose between Two different color management engines. The Default is "Little CMS", but you could also select "Microsoft ICM" if you want.

Yes, I tried it and hated it!

I tried PSE 14 and found that they still lacked any support for channels, it didn't have the calculations tool (because it doesn't support channels so you cannot blend them), and it has almost no support for editing 16-bit images.

Right now, it sounds as if Serif's Affinity comes close-ish and seems to have developed a bit of a following. The only problem is, it is only for Mac right now. My understanding is the PC version isn't due out till . . . later this year/ Early next year?

Where PSP X5 was installed I copied the Nik folder out of the plugins area, then copied that folder into the plugins area in PSP X6/7/8 of the 32 bit version. Works fine as PSP discovers it when it starts up.

You always find it in....

C:\Program Files (x86)\Corel\Corel Paintshop Pro X?\Plugins\EN\Nik Software

So copy that whole "Nik Software" folder from the X5 version to any of the later versions into the same folder location, and here it is is PSP X8......

Naturally I tried the Google freebie Nik and naturally that did not install. But the old Nik V3 from years back PSP freebie still lives on nicely, thank you.

Have you tried to install the trial Lightroom and install the Nik Plug-in that way? I'm going to reinstall my PSP and see if I can copy them over there.

No, the old Nik works fine when I (very rarely) use it so I never bothered to persevere with the Google ones.

Some say the old V3 had more film simulation options than the later V4 Nik but I never bothered to check that.

I played with Elements a while ago (think last version was PSE 10), but then moved to a Mac and found that Aperture did just about everything I wanted. Purchased what I believe is a Mac only program called Pixelmator - sort of Photoshop light, but it does everything I need that is not available in Aperture - and now Lightroom that Aperture was discontinued.

Just never warmed to the interface of Elements. For me Aperture - and now Lightroom - are much more user friendly.

As you said, I have not gotten into the subscription system for Lightroom. While I do get updates, I believe there are "features" that the online version has that the "disk" version doesn't. And to be honest, if Adobe offered JUST Lightroom for like $5.00 a month, I would probably break down and subscribe. But don't need access to the full Photoshop, so holding out so far.

Yes Nik Color Efex Pro did have more options... However, the google suite offers more than just the color efex pro so that's why I wanted them.

It's working great for me with PSP X8 in both eht 64 bit and 32 bit versions (It's a little sluggish with the 32 bit version, but it works)

This is how I set it up:

DUDE!!!! You just saved me a monthly subscription! I tried the copying approach but they wouldn't load that way, as soon as I used your method it worked awesome!

Now I just have to see about custom camera profiles in PSP X8.

I swear though, you would think that Corel would have had enough knowledge to tell me how to make this work!

Well remember, We ARE talking about Corel, here!

But seriously, I learned this from the Corel User to User Forum on their web site:

http://forum.corel.com/EN/index.php

I don't care what the software brand you buy, that company sponsored user's forum is worth its weight in gold, and signing up to the user's forum should be the first thing you do after registering the software.

Just tried that setup on this little feeble steam powered netbook, 32 bit and a copy of PSP X7 - didn't work for me. But later I will go to a real 64bit PC and try the same with PSP X8. Not that it really matters to me as I am really a not much use of filters guy.

Yes the PSP support has always been good via forums and individuals' pages, mainly back in JASC days when I spent most time with PSP.

Regards...... Guy

Now on i7 notebook with higher pressure steam power. Nik plugins now working fine in PSP X8 64 bit, thanks for that. On the netbook I must have done something stupid (not unusual for me).

Now I can turn nice looking M4/3 images into total film-like rubbish complete with dirt and scratches. Oh joy. Seriously though, there are some interesting & useful tools in the collection.

Personally, I love the dynamic skin softener because my grand daughter has scars from a dog bite when she was 2. I also think Silver Efex Pro 2 is worth it's weight in Gold.

Might give it another look. ACDCee is looking pretty good, too, but neither of these seem to have much community support.

...you may be able to get the last version on CD, but support is limited (as in, don't expect any updates). A software version at end of life with no support is also something I'm not going to spend money on.
I would still be using Lightroom 4 as it did everything I needed to do, with my EM5 and EPL5 ORF's, except I had to upgrade to Lightroom 6 to get RAW support for my GM1'sRAW files.

It was hidden in a back menu, but I found the upgrade on Adobe's website for around $60.

I found most of the newer features of LR6 unimpressive. Cloning is better on my Elements 6. Perhaps the NR is improved over LR4, although I have a fallback in Elements 6 with Noiseware.
