Why no EVF lens cover?

My GH3 and GH4 has foggy and sratched EVF lens. The EVF lens is plastic and very sensitive to any touching and the coating seems to peel off easily. The tiny high resolution EVF becomes hard to use if there is any fault in EVF ocular. All optical equipment has lens covers. Objectives, binoculars, oculars, telescopes, gun optics, eye glasses..

Why there is no protective cover in camera oculars? EVF ocular is difficult to clean because it is so tiny and it mounted in a hole. Even when using very carefully it gets dusty and with moisture the dust becomes sticky. I must make some clumsy EVF cover myself.

I will also try to use plastic polishing paste to fix my foggy EVFs.

It's going to be coated, polishing it sounds a very bad idea.
 
Although SLRs are (were) usually supplied with a cover for the OVF it was usually quickly lost and very rarely used. Its main purpose wasn't to protect the glass, but to prevent light entering and affecting exposure metering when taking shots without looking through the viewfinder.
 
I don't see how something that recessed could easily be damaged. Cotton buds and alcohol, being careful not to soak it and get liquid inside, would be my approach, but then you are in front of it and i am not...

My EVFs are ruined anyway. I dont think they become worse.

When the camera hangs in neck clothes may touch the EVF in its hole. There may be some canvas also in bag which touches in some angle the EVF. I have tried to be very careful with my GH4 because I knew the EVF is super sensitive but one day I figured the GH4 EVF has fine scratches and foggy image.

It was to avoid light leaking in long exposures. Notching to do with exposure metering as the leak is so slight that it is like 0.1% in normal 1/30 shutter speeds exposures. But doing a 5-15min exposures a light leak is bad.
 
The evf should be over 5mm deep in cover. Nothing serious cn touch it if well done.
 
I have GH2 that older than your GH3 and GH4 cameras, I have taken more than 70000 shots with my camera, and I have no traces of wearing of EVF glass - it is like a new

This is an EVF, not an OVF in an SLR. There's no way light could leak from the EVF to the sensor.

My GH2 is OK too. GH3 and GH4 has very soft plastic EVF lens and its coating seems to peel off with normal use.
 
I own two GH4's, have had them for over a year now, and don't have an issue with either one of their EVF's. Granted, I rarely clean them (they never really get dirty), but when I do clean them I take the rubber EVF surround off, and use a little bit of glass cleaner on a MF cloth.

It not only effectively removes debris and oils from the EVF, but because it's moist it won't scratch the lens. I would avoid using alcohol, just because it may affect the coating on the EVF. I would also avoid paper products and cotton, just to be careful.

It's annoying yes, but with proper care it's really a non-issue. Unfortunately, it sounds like you've already damaged the EVF so this is of no help to you, but hopefully it can help others.
 
Then you would complain about the lost EVF cover.

I have a hard enough time keeping track of my rubber eye cup which keeps falling off.

I suppose they could design an EVF cover integrated into the body, with a slide switch, but it would add complexity to the body and something else to break.

Just remember, there is no scratch, dust or fingerprint on an EVF that can have any effect on your photos. This is just another want for the gear obsessed fanatic who wears white cotton gloves when they handle a camera.
 
It's not included because of cost saving. It would cost Olympus 25 cents to include a cover that can be attached to the strap (see E-620).

Also, the very large and ungainly EVF eyecup makes attaching a cover a design challenge.
 
Here is another one. Why haven't they invented a shutter mechanism that stays shut when the camera is powered off? I have picked up shelved models and inspected them to find out that their shutters were shut. Why not integrate that as a feature? It would help to prevent any dust ingress when changing lenses.
