D500 grip size

I've been waiting for years for a "D400" with a mid-size body, only to find that the D500 grip is far narrower than the D200 or D810. The D7000 and D7200 grips are fine, but I find the mid-sized D200 and D810 bodies very comfortable to hold, (the D750 not so much.)

Anyone else finding that the D500 grip just doesn't fit them very well? The grip seems much too narrow to me.

The D500 seems like an outstanding camera in all respects except it just doesn't feel comfortable in my hands compared to other Nikons. I'm considering adding a layer of thin neoprene foam and tape to make it fit better, but it seems a shame to do that to a new camera. (Know any good Nikon hand surgeons?)

Hope I'll get used to it.

Back then in CES, my impression was that the grip design is exactly the same as the D750's. D500 has a bit of an advantage even, as the grip is farther away from the lens mount.

I have small hands I find it the best grip compared to the D-70 D-90 D-100 and D-300 Ive have owned or used.

The D750 grip is larger. There is no doubt in my mind. I'm holding both bodies right now. My fingernails hit the body of the camera next to the lens and there is a small gap in the palm of my hand on the other side if the grip on the D500. The D750 fills the hand better and my fingertips don't touch the body. The D500 grip is "taller" though, so my finger doesn't have to bend as much to hit the shutter button.

I just picked up old Nikon D2Hs to feel the grip. This grip has a much larger overall grip design. Then I compared D810 to the D500 grip really to not find much of a difference.

What I do know is that Nikon has created another "Legend" camera with the new D500. This camera is an overall winner as stated by so many. I really enjoyed my last few days experimenting with this new camera body. I look forward to shooting whales in the Anacortes Islands for three days as I leave for my trip to Washington in the early am. The speed and AF system should allow me to up my game in wildlife photography considering I've used almost ever camera Nikon has produced staring with the D1. Finally what makes this new D500 camera so good as I've teamed it up with the new Nikkor 200-500mm lens for unbelieveable portable camera/lens combo:-)

So I love the D500 grip and overall design. Grab your equipment and go afield to capture that moment.

If I could only put that D500 in my old D200 body! But, amazing how camera technology has changed since then.

Compared to my D810, the D500 grip is deeper, and I prefer the d500. Still wish, it would be a little wider...

I was out using it this morning; the grip is easier to get used to than I expected. This is the camera I've waited years for.

Hey DB

I agree with you. Now after maybe 5000 pics this camera just meets my needs and makes me a better photographer.

Thx

I have no problem with the D500 grip size. The D7200 does have too small a grip and with my large hands it was not the best.

The distance between the back of the camera and the front of the grip is 2.6 inches with both the D500 and the D750. The thickness of the grip on the D750 and the D500 is 1.12 inches.

The key difference is at the back of the camera where the D500 has the thumb rest indentation which for me is a big improvement over the D750 for hand holding the camera.

I find the grip much better than my D750 grip. It does feel secure and perfect for the size of my hand. No complaints here !

Sorry - couldn't disagree more - of the Nikon's I have used and owned (FM,FM2,FE2,F3,F90,F100,D70,D700,D600,D810,D7200,D500) I think the D500 has the most comfortable grip for me.

I have large hands (I guess) so I am not sure that is a factor.

What a great place !!!! You are correct we departed out of Anacortes, WA by boat then traveled all throughout the San Juan Islands. What a photographer's paradise. I would love the opportunity to spend additional time there to explore its wonders.

Thanks :-)

I ditto your point. There's nothing better than when the Bull elk are at the peak of rut and the photo opportunities present themselves. I won't remember how a camera grip felt but that image in the viewfinder is what keeps me looking for that next awesome shot! I do know that the new Nikon D500 camera is great piece of equipment team up with my new 200-500mm lens. This camera /lens combo is turning out thousands of great images so far,

Grab your equipment and capture that moment in time for others to enjoy!

Thx :-)
