I got my D500 yesterday so far everything is looking pretty good. One thing I did notice is that the battery life seems to go pretty fast compared to my D300s. On a full charge, I take a few shots review them on the lcd, check back and it's already at 98% and dropping with minimal use...again compared to what I'm use to getting with the D300s. I used 2 batteries to compare...the one that came with the camera and a new spare.

Has anyone else experienced this as well? How many shot are you getting from a full charge?

Is this before or after battery charged the internal battery and after all of LCD time used during setup?

I had a bad start too. Today after 1100 shots I have 50% left.

It's the first two charges, but I didn't take into account the internal battery charge needs to be charged.

The second charge I and only reviewed some images after after a few shot. I'm hoping that it will improve.

Thanks so much for letting me know. I was hoping that it will get better, but I only had my D300s as a reference. I didn't turn on wifi or use snap chat yet...so I could not say that was impacting the battery.

I'm so excited to finally have the camera and I thought...oh no...is this another Nikon blunder that's going to kill what appears to be an excellent camera.

I really appreciate your feedback...I'm feeling better about my pre order buy.

I noticed the same thing, I mentioned it on another thread in this forum....I have several Nikon EN-EL15 batteries and have used the new one as well as my older ones and yes, it drains both old and new batteries faster than my D750 and D800e!!!! This does not look like a normal battery drain.... Does any body have the CIPA No. of shots Numbers for D500, D750 and D800e bodies?

I just put a newly charged (0 age at 100%), a 10 minutes later its down to 98% (took about 5 shots......I Auto fine tuned 6 lenses started at about 88%, after about 2 hours of auto fine tuning, it was down to 55%. I have never experience this on either the D750 or the D800e....I hope this is not an issue....

I so what to ask about how the "Auto Fine Tuning" want on your D750 and D800e, but I will pass on that.

Seriously, 2 hours of turning LV on and off a good bit will eat up a battery.

Doesn't the auto AF fine tuning require live view for much of the time? Two hours with live view on much of the time would be enough to drain the battery severely.

I found out -

D800/e-900 shots

D750 - 1230 shots,

D810 - 1200 shots

D610 - 900 SHOTS

DF - 1400 Shots

LV was not continuously on during Auto Fine Tune, maybe 25% of that time...I will wait for a few more charges, though I used several other batteries while the new one was charging...in the last two days...

Well, it's like Tesla. You can go only so far.

From D500 manual to be exact

How many shot are you getting from a full charge?
Today, I was able to shoot exactly 1,101 14-bit lossless compressed RAW + JPEG Fine before completely exhausting the battery (one of the middle-aged ones I borrowed from my D810 stash - charged to 100% at the start of the day). I did a modest amount of chimping, and no exotic modes or features were enabled. Normally, I shoot RAW only, but decided to add JPEGs due to the dearth of viewers capable of decoding D500 NEFs (I normally use ACDsee Pro).

By comparison, I can usually shoot approximately 1,800 - 2,000 14-bit lossless compressed RAWs on my D810, again with modest chimping. -iwbs

So far I could not use it without draining battery within few minutes

A battery that doesn't last as long as some other Nikon DSLRs isn't going to kill the camera.

It will still be much better than say Sony cameras.

And carrying an extra battery is good to do as a standard practice because you never know when you'll need a backup (I had a batter fall on the sidewalk and fail and didn't have another on me).

I had a similar battery problem with my newest Kindle. I went on a Kindle Forum and was told that it takes a few charging/ discharging cycles to fully charge the battery. Hopefully, this is your problem.

By discharging, I was referring to using the battery in the camera, not using a charger with a discharge function.

I shot 550 this morning recorded raws to one card with image review off plus a little liveview time (AF fine-tune) and I dropped 25%

Set your meter auto-off delay to 5-10 seconds. Also Snapbridge and WiFi are harder on the battery than normal. If you aren't using live view you should get thousands of images per charge. I can get 3000 images out of my D810 easily and the D500 has better life yet.
