hay people, im getting ready to get a canon eos d30 and was wondering what lens do you think would be the best. i am a college student and on a limited buget so i cant go out and buy a lens that costs as much as the camera.... ;-) anyways im looking for something that is like a standered zoom lens, 28-80 or something similar. what do you think about the canon brand ef usm lenses? are they good, bad or ugly??

.. will tell you to get the 28-135 IS USM, which is a great lens.

You might be abled to find a few threads about this lens and people buying their first D-SLR ;-)

If you're on a budget first buy the 50mm f/1.8, it's a very good and inexpensive (about $100) lens to start with.

Once you feel limited by this lens you'll have enough experience to decide much better what lens to add next.

WOW, im surprised how fast i got answers!! this is a pretty good forum... thanks so far, i currently shot an olympus om 1 i have a wide range of lenses for it and what im asking really is what brands are hot and what brands are not. like what should i at all costs totaly avoid and what would be a good brand... but thanks for the tips soo far i will keep that in mind...

Every brand has lemons and diamonds in their lens lineup, but as a rule of thumb stay away from Voigtlander, Phoenix and Cosina. Canon has the best lineup, followed by Sigma, IMO.

You cannot go by brand, better follow this forum for a week or two and you'll easily notice which lenses are good and which not.
