Why does this forum have the dreaded Threaded View?

You only need to switch once. Although I use Flat, I appreciate Threaded has certain advantages/uses.

What I want to know is why any forum has flat view.

When someone is first time visiting this forum they can't understand anything at all, until they figure how to switch to flat view. even later on for every thread you have to switch manually to flat view..

Why is this made so unpractical?
I hate flat view. It makes me click on every comment to read them. It is much easier and faster to skip the posts you know are just talking heads when you can see them coming.

Threaded view permits you to easily respond to post no 11 without having your post appearing at the end of the thread as with other forum software.

And you have the option of switching to flat view if you really prefer that.

Also it is more efficient if it is an image thread because you don't have to download all the images every time you want to check a new post.

What I want to know is what is going on (if anything is) in the brain of someone who reads a page of flat view, and clicks "Reply" on the last post to reply to a post in the middle of the page. So many times I have found what seemed to be a direct reply to one of my posts, that made my head spin trying to figure out why that person said that thing to me, before I realized that they clicked "Reply" on the wrong post. That mistake is harder to make in Threaded view.

Threaded view can get unwieldy in other websites where the number of posts in a thread is not limited. There are websites where a thread has over 10,000 posts. It is very hard to look at the thread tree when there are that many posts. So, I use flat view on some other websites (but not here).

I agree! I like knowing the context in which a post was posted. The flat view makes absolutely no sense to me.
It boggles the mind how people can just assume that others know to what or whom they are replying. So many people take communication for granted, and for many, it doesn't really matter; as long as it feels like communication, it's good enough.

On the other hand, you have the opposite problem; people who quote entire conversations many levels deep just to see the nicer text colors, apparently, and you have to scroll for a minute to get down to their original text.

Exactly. I cannot understand why from time to time some people come to complain against threaded view.

Regards,

I don't read more than 20-30 posts in ANY threads! so a 10,000 post thread offers me no problems at all! The way I look at it, if the responders can't cover the topic within the first 10 posts or so, it's never going to happen!

...to have figured out, and made good use of, threaded view, regardless of how confused you were when you first visited the forums.

Some people are just a little more quick than others, I suppose.

That's rather shocking. Every forum I know of has a threaded view. Lots of advantages, I suggest you learn them.

I've just found out what flat view is :-D After so many months I had finally worked out how the 'forum, parent, next, previous' etc works, now I have gone even further into this forum's working.

I think I'm ready to move away from the camera's auto mode now. :-)

Edit: Now I can't get back to the old layout.

Threaded view is to save those of us who have figured out how it works to avoid entire sub-parts of threads full of posts that are of no interest to us. For example, if someone makes a comment I think is irrelevant and not amusing, I can ignore all replies to that post easily, by going to the next response that isn't threaded under the silly one.

Seriously this is one of the best forums sites I have ever used and threaded by default and implemented so well is a good reason why.
