I have the 70-210 D 4,5/5,6. I can change it with the 70-300 ED.Are you advice me to change? What about sharpness and image quality? I'm satisfied by 70-210, but I need more tele... If I take the 70-300 and a TC is a good solution?

Mauro,

I wouldn't change. The 70-210D is a much better lens in terms of build and optics. You can compare these lenses on http://www.kenrockwell.com . I would purchase the 70-300 non ED for about $100 or a TC if you need the extra length. I know that would give you overlap but your 70-210 is a very good lens.

I have owned both lenses, and eventually sold the 70-210D lens and kept the 70-300ED. I bought the 70-210 on the recomendation on Ken Rockwell's site and thought it would be a much better lens than my 70-300. I have to admit that the build quality was excellent and the pictures were decent from the lens, but the contrast and sharpness from the 70-300 was even better, so felt there was no need to keep the lens. Maybe I got a good sample, but my 70-300ed is one of the sharpest lenses I have used. The 300mm end may not be it's best spot but up to the mid 200mm's it is superb. Not so sure about using a teleconverter with it. It wil also make the lens pretty slow. The 300mm end becomes a 450mm equivalent which is pretty long anyways.

I'd like to see an original photo with your 70-300 ED. Right now I am getting excellent results with my 70-210D at all focal lengths, but am hesitant to get a 70-300 ED, since most samples I've seen here on dpreview suck. Thanks!

You can take a look at a gallery at http://www.pbase.com/ronhep/s2_old_montreal1 where I used either the Tokina 28-70 or the Nikon 70-300ED for all the shots there. I have identified what lens the shots are taken with when you open the picture. Might give you a bit of an idea. It is a very good lens. It was sharper than the 70-210 I had. These were actually some of the first shots taken with my S2.

Mauro:

I have the 70-300 G lens. There's a review or two online that state that they couldn't really tell a difference with images from either the G or D lens.

The 70-210 is a much better lens with build and optics, but the question is whether or not you care about that if it's a lens you are going to be rough on or just a "fun" lens. Save yourself about $150 if you need the extra focal length. There's nothing wrong with the G version 70-300.

Take a peek at my giraffe pictures at Animal Kingdom. All were taken with the 70-300 G lens. While not perfect...the lens is darn good for what you get.

I just posted some pics over on the Nikon SLR Talk forum with my new 70-300 ED. I like this lens a lot. Only complaint is that it is not AFS so the focus is slower, seeks a bit more and noisy. Creates great images though.

Check them out at http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1021&message=5771417 .
