I did a lot of research and sold off the a7r that I previously had and bought the a7rII system because it was on sale for grey import. Without thinking much, I didn't know that the a7rII is using another form (or differently coded) raw file. Looks like my Lightroom5 does not support the ARW file that the a7rii saves.

Somewhere online, I read that I can use a adobe converter to change the raw file. But i'm guessing that would be a major headache since it's CPU intensive. I'm not a pro by any means and shoot or edit photos just for fun. I don't want to buy into the CC version of Lightroom where I need to pay monthly to use the prog.

Is Lightroom6 still supported? Does it get the updates needed? How long will Adobe support this? Any info on this helps, thanks !

Capture One (Sony) is free.

Capture One Pro (Sony) is $50

I own both Capture One and Lightroom CC ... I use Capture One by choice and preference

It's by no means certain that Adobe's entry level price for PS CC will remain at current levels , in fact in some parts of the World prices are already increasing :-(

It may be time to change?

I use Lightroom 4 with Adobe's free DNG converter. It's a little slow to convert (~10 photos / minute on my laptop), but you can just leave it going while you're getting a cup of coffee. I like to convert on DNG on import anyway, so it doesn't take that much more time, just an extra step in-between.

Thanks,

I've actually never heard of Capture One. So the free version if Capture One Express (for Sony)?

Why did you prefer this over Lightroom?

The curve tools and presets seem to be a hit for Sony users and Sony partnered with Capture One. I switched a year ago and have been very happy. Some were claiming that color was more accurate in C1 but Jim Kasson did some analysis and showed it is nearly identical to Adobe.

There is bit of a learning curve but if you have used Photoshop or LR you will get the hang of it quickly. If you are only shooting Sony Raw, the $50 cost is quite affordable and includes a few additional features over the free Sony version, live tethering and some local adjustment tools. The standard Pro version which handles all RAW formats is $300. C1 is continuously updated with some great new features in the past year.

Tips:

Use Catalogs, not sessions for the easiest start. I create one Catalog per year.

Don't try to import your LR catalog right off the bat. It will become a resource hog.

Drawbacks:

No support for plug ins like CC or LR. You can still use plug in software like Photomatix Pro, Topaz or NIK Collection using the "EDIT WITH" feature.

The a7rII data is coded the same way, if you don't use uncompressed RAW. The header is different, and that's enough for Lr to give up.

Not particularly, and DNG converter can do batch operation, so you can go get coffee while it works.

While I too find the CC monthly option a great deal for the LR & PS combo, I think you could have a free option that would work by importing into the free Sony version of Capture One to convert the raws and then just save them out as TIF files which your version of LR would have no issue handling and although an extra step it would not mess up your current workflow much.

For the record, you can buy Lightroom 6, the current standalone version of Lightroom except that it doesn't have the de-haze feature and boundary warp option for the photomerge panorama feature.

if money is a problem go for capture 1,

but i think the extra program called photoshop is nice added bonus to LR.

there are free raw converters as well but what's a 100 bucks a year when buying a $3000 camera?

the good thing is that you can now try a lot of them and see which you like most.

all raw programs suck in one area at least, pick your poison ;-)

Well in that case, go for one of the free raw converters.
