Clearly Canon has come a long way.
80D left vs A6300 right, ISO6400.
Very close, A6300 has edge noise wise, but colors and clarity 80D compares very closely.

Now this surprised me. 80D vs K3.
ISO6400 80D left, K3 right.
80D clearly stronger and more decent color hue, clarity and even noise is better.
If it beats the Pentax, it has some magic. Pentax is very strong image quality wise and is a Sony sensor.

To confirm the ISO 6400 sample from Imaging Resource, from other critical parts of the image.
First 80D vs D7100

Surprise for me is the swatch comparison. While the D7200 looks stronger on the blues, it does not look good on the dark green and the 80D looks better on the black cloth.
80D compares very well.
I realise this is ISO6400, but ISO6400 is putting the sensor to the test and exaggerating its tendencies, surely. Also, pushing the noise to its limits and bringing out any 'false' noise suppression with loss of detail.
So, noise, detail, color strength and retention, acuity, all exaggerated at ISO6400. Makes a good basis I think.
That is why I chose this ISO as a basis for quick and dirty comparison. Incidentally, also note that many praise the D7200 for excellent High Iso capability, so this puts the 80D within a D7200 strength area, so to speak.
Looks to me that the 80D compares very well, better than the D7100 , not quite matching the D7200, but with a few surprises.
Surely much better than some early sarcastic comments by some that nowhere near its competitors sensors. The image samples indicate otherwise, that it is in fact, quite comparable.

80D Top left, D7200 Top right

ISO100 _3EV push noise comparison 80D/D7200/D7100/A6000
80D comes out very well.
80D Noise uniform, albeit larger than D7200, retains black and very little color blotching.
D7200, uniform and nice pattern noise, little color blotch but black gone magenta.
D7100 uniform noise but horizontal banding appearing. Black not as magenta as D7200 but not strong either.
A6000 retains black but color blotching and not uniform.
So, my opinion is that at BOTH low and High ISO, the 80D holds its own against recent competitor models. Yes, the D7200 is the benchmark, apart from the magenta shift. But the 80D does very well indeed.
Hopefully the unwarranted (or no longer warranted now that Canon has new sensors) continuing hyperbole re Canon sensors will shut down once the camera (and the IDX II) gets into everyday users hands, looking forward to seeing samples.

Not bad here either, considering.
80D noise strong, but remains quite uniform. D7200 cleanest, still magenta hue but forgive that as noise so well controlled. Marginal banding creeping in.
D7100 fairly clean , though stronger banding evident. The 80D noise is preferable to the D7100 banding.
The A6000 has totally fallen apart, strong noise and very color blotchy.
So again, the 80D seems to be running second here to the D7200. Definitely better than both the D7100 and A6000.

Thanks for your excellent analysis. I agree that the D7200 is still the standard setter and the D7100 is ruined by banding (otherwise it would be second). The color noise is a problem with the A6000 (correctable?), otherwise it would be second. At a +4 push, the 80D is clearly better than the Sony.
Canon has made wonderful strides with this camera. If it's discounted by Christmas, I may be tempted to pick one up.

80D sensor does a great job compared to what the 70D does, now it's up to focus system to be tested if it is good or not.
I did like the dual pixel focus in liveview when Ihad the 70D but it was to slow to use on anything than non moving subjects.
It seems like the 80D is faster in liveview, I hope the 45 point pdaf is much more reliable than the 19 point of 70D.
