Hello,

Two quick questions: is there any indication that a decent SD wouldn't be fast enough to record 4K video on a D500?

Do we have a rough estimate of how big video files will be with the D500? How many MB per minute for 4K, and for 1080p?

Thanks!

Quick answer rtfm, well, if there was one.

D5 manual says for video, a card that does 45 MB/s (300x) or better recommended.

4K 30p UHD video has a maximum bitrate of 144 Mbps = 18 MB/s.

Thanks for the info. Do you know what the mbps will be for 1080p (60 or 30)?

All maximum bitrates are in the D5 manual page 67 (english for EU)

I think the D500 rates will be close or the same to these.

I have a Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera with Sandisk Extreme (80MB/s) and Extreme Pro (95MB/s) SD cards. I can Use all of them with Apple ProRes 422 HQ (27.5MB/s) but only Extreme Pro when using Apple DNG RAW.

I don't know the data rate for Apple DNG Raw but it should be same as ProRes HQ.

So the 60MB/s write speed of Extreme Plus should be fine with the D5/D500 4K performance.

Theoretically at least :)

In theory, reading Nikon's advice in their D5 manual, yes. Testing will tell.

Good Q - A very good 1080p and Video editor (cutting and rejoining video files) is Videoredo TV Suite. Also you can open up multiple Video file types and to re-encode them back to many different video media types and devices.

For creating Video Slideshows / films with Text / Transistions Proshow Gold and Wondershare is not bad for its features and prices.

I am really enjoy using Video features with my Camera and DSLR's - although I tend to only shoot small film sequences.

Yes, says so in manual brochure. 29 mins 59 secs.

Also cuts files into 3 mins files. Also in the manual. It is, can't find the source for that info right now though.

Oeps, was thinking D5 for a minute, that manual is out. D500 isn't yet.

Thanks for the info. Does the recording time limitations apply to the 4k only or both of 4k and 1080p?

From what I know, the 29:59 minute limit is rather universal within DSLR's. The 3 minute per file storing sytem is to do with FAT32 being used afaik.
