Get rid of NTSC warning on A6300 ...

Hi all :)

I've just received my A6300 and have been playing around with it for a while now. I haven't had a camera that can shoot in 4K before, and previously I shot all my 'holiday' / weekend outing movies at 1080p 50p on my A5100.

I love the 4K quality at 25p but I like the additional smoothness of shooting at 30p in NTSC mode (I'm in the UK). However, when setting the camera to NTSC mode it then warns me that I'm in NTSC mode every time I turn the camera on! Is there a way to disable this? Surely the only difference between PAL and NTSC mode is the frame rate of the video (and maybe the format of the HDMI output) ...?

Many thanks for your help!

David

I dont see that on my A6300... I dont remember if there is a regional setting or something like that in the camera setup for the time zone? maybe the camera cross check itself with one of those setting to make sure you are using the format suit for your region?

I'm not sure but i read somewhere that european models can switch back and forth to NTSC

American models are not able to switch to PAL

Please correct me if i'm wrong

Interesting, thanks for the very quick replies! :)

I couldn't find any settings relating to warnings that could be disabled, nor area settings.

By the way, I have the option to select PAL / NTSC under the 'suitcase' tab in the menu, on page 3 ("NTSC/PAL Selector").

It's no big deal, and I'll probably just live with the message or switch back to PAL ...

Thanks again!

Have you tried re-format the SD card in the camera ?

The same problem is being reported on the FF forum for the A7Rii. Some are buying PAL versions of the A7Rii in the US at a steep discount but finding that trying to use NTSC as default results in the camera continuously warning the user, at startup and wake from sleep. No solution for this except to use the native video format. The camera's hardware dictates PAL or NTSC. No fix and kind of silly.

Many thanks for that feedback PVCdroid, that seems to summarise what I'm finding too.

Oh well, as I say, not a major bug bear!

David :-)

PS. lhkjacky - When you switch from PAL to NTSC it automatically reformats the card anyway ...

Same nonsense with the A7RII and it's not just when the camera is booted up but also when it comes out of power saving mode. I have a PAL version and also shoot in NTSC mode to obtain the higher frame rate. This didn't bother me too much at first however now it is hugely annoying, totally getting on my goat such that I shall sell the camera. That and the EVF dimming when shooting 4k means I shall look elsewhere.

What is Sony thinking?

Have you tried changing (re-setting) your region setting to USA? I think the camera is telling you that when you first set up the camera and set the clock you probably told it your were in time zone zero ie GMT and it has that as a PAL region so warns you when you change it to NTSC.

Fortunately, there is a "hack" now for the A7 series and you can disable that warning message permanently.

There is a way to remove the warning, the A7 fixing OpenMemories-Tweak custom application supports the A6300 as well now - https://github.com/ma1co/OpenMemories-Tweak

The 6300 has been added as well if you look at the supported list in the capability section.

I've successfully applied this to both my A6000 and A6300, and now I can keep both cameras in NTSC mode on European PAL models and the warning dialog is completely gone.

One downside though - to remove the warning, you have to actually remove the PAL/NTSC menu selection item completely using the tweak.

So I set my cameras into NTSC mode (reboot with warnings...), then turn off the selector in the tweaks.

That removes the menu option to change it, but also the warning on startup too.

You can re-enable the menu item again to switch back, but you'll get the warnings if the camera is set to something other than the native setting.

For me, keeping it in NTSC permanently is not a problem.

One thing to note mind you, you will still have to format the card - if the database was created in PAL mode, it warns you that you "can't record in the current mode".

So you can't mix NTSC and PAL files on the same card still. But much better than being bugged every time the camera wakes up!

I couldn't get the installer to work on my Mac, I had to use a Windows PC and Internet Explorer as it recommends, but then it all went very smoothly. Your millage may vary etc :-)

Thanks for pointing this out, and good to know it is available for A6300 now. I did exactly same on my A7rii. VERY HAPPY. Hope this group will add additional custom features to our cameras over time.

Or even better: Sony could open the code and their App store to third party developers. That really would put the Sony cams a generation ahead of all their competitors.

  1. Enter the menu and set the USB Connection setting to MTP
  2. Connect a USB cable to a laptop
  3. Download the latest release from the GitHub Repository
  4. Install the app and launch it
  5. Go to the install tab from the application and select from the list the OpenMemories: Tweak
  6. Click install the app
  7. After the installation is successful remove the USB cable
  8. Start the camera and enter the menu in the application tab and go to the “Application List” item
  9. From there select “Open Memories: Tweak” application
  10. Go to the “Protection” tab and make sure the “Unlock protected settings” option is Selected
  11. Then go to the Region Tab and deselect the “Enable PAL/NTSC selector & warning”
  12. Press the menu button to exit
  13. Turn off and then turn on the camera
  14. After the camera opens the warning should no longer pop-up

There are many differences between PAL and NTSC. Frame rate is probably the least significant of them.
really? when it comes to the HD formats.. please tell. ;)
