If the D200 is anounced, what will the major improvements be over the D100? Low light focus speed, flash sync speeds, fps increase with increased buffer?

Shrug. Only Nikon knows. My guess would be that Nikon will try to maintain market segmentation along the lines of their film cameras. So expect one DSLR to be very N80-like in performance (a la the D100), maybe one DSLR to be F100-like in performance, and a pair of high-end DSLRs (D2h,D2x) to fill the F5 slot.

I don't really know, but I'd say that they need to move the capabilities much closer to the F100 in all of the ways that you mention. There are a group of pros out there have always gone of the 2nd tier pro model (travel pros like Bob Krist). They moved from the N90s to the F100. I doubt they would be totally satisified with the current D100, so the D200 will probably be more to their liking.

What digital SLR fits into the F100 slot for Nikon?

Sadly, there isn't really one right now. They tried to pretend that the D100 could do this, but it's really a digital N80. The D1x/h bodies are hybrids of the F5 and F100. So right now, the market segmentation of the digital bodies is only 2 levels: D100 and D1x/h. In the future they may try for a tri-level split like they have in their film SLRs.

About the 10th time around for this topic.....what good is
speculation at this point.

Sorry, didn't mean to beat a dead horse. I'm just getting ready to ditch my CP5700 for a Nikon DSLR and didn't know if it would be better to wait a bit for the D100 replacement.

I also have a CP5700 and plan to buy a D100 soon. But I will keep the 5700 becuase it's moe portable for travel overseas without a huge camera bag.

Love the "Should I wait..." posts... I was right in there as well.

I just upgraded from the CP5k... haven't looked back and am loving the D100. It's leaps and bounds beyond the CP5x00. I can't tell you how much more satisfied I am with the D100. The coolpix are fantastic for what they are, but I feel like I'm back with 35mm again with the bonus of shooting digital.

I truly missed that feeling.

You will not go wrong by upgrading to the D100 from any coolpix series. It will not disappoint you. If you wait, that's up to you...but I decided that they'll be coming out with a new camera soon regardless of what you buy. You'll go broke upgrading to the latest and greatest every time a new model comes out. Take your bet and jump in and if the camera does just about everything you want it to do, then relax...shoot a ton of pics and enjoy.

Christian,

I am no oracle but I would bet 6months or so before you can put your hands on a d200 and maybe much more. I would decide between the D2H and the other existing Nikon dig bodies (I'll bet 3-4 months before you touch a D2H) I think you would be very happy with either D100 or D2H.

You made no mention of the D1X, is it not a contender?

We took a new D100 for a three week tour of five eastern european countries and are delighted with the camera. We never changed lenses or recharged the battery. Our only complaint with the body is the issue of inadvertantly tuning the camera on. Since our return, i purchased the Nikon soft case for the D100 and no longer have the on/off problem.

We tarvel a lot, and i swore never to travel with our N90s after a one hour search of our baggage and lead film bag in the bowels of the Rome airport on our way home from Tunisia.
