What manual controls/settings apply to video mode on Fuji XQ1?
  • Shadow tone adjustment?
  • Highlight tone adjustment?
  • Color density?
  • Dynamic range adjustment?
  • Sharpness adjustment?
  • Exposure compensation?
  • Film simulation choice?
  • Manual white balance?
Sample videos for the XQ1 on Youtube seem to have high saturation, high contrast and dark shadows. Why is that? Is it because they are all recorded in Velvia, or is it because the XQ1 records videos with higher saturation and contrast than it does with the still image? Can these dark shadows and high saturation be turned off in video mode via the settings?

Hi

There practically no adjustment during recording.

Before recording you can choose white balance, film simulation. I think it ignores the highlight, sgadow, saturation adjustment.

It is pretty much a snapshot movie camera, nothing more.

If anything, the quality is better than from my XE1. But it is very average compared to nowadays video standard on compact or mirrorless camera.

You should look at Sony RX-100 but it is not the same price tag.

Thanks for answering. That's good to know about the white balance allowed to be set for video. Previous Fuji cameras I've owned have not allowed white balance to be set manually for video and inaccurate auto-white balance was always one of the worst things about Fuji video in the past.

It's bad the colour density and shadow tones can't be changed for video because the default settings Fuji have chosen for the XQ1 seem quite dark. If the default Provia is already quite highly saturated with dark shadows then Velvia must be even worse!

Do you know if the shutter speed and aperture can be manually set before video recording? Some websites say it can and others websites say it can't?

Aperture and shutter speed are automatically adjusted during video recording.

I am sure of that because I tried. For example if I am in manual mode or shutter speed priority, the video exposure is correct even if I set the camera to seriously under expose before recording.

So the camera ignores user setting when recording

Yes it is sad however it is a compact camera so it is mainly to be used as a point and shoot.

I still find it to be acceptable for casual video recording. As said better than my xe1 (less jaggies and artefact)

One other drawback is that you can hear the lens motor when zooming. So better set your focal length before recording if you do not want to capture that in your audio.

Maybe you should look at the x30, it might have more options for video recording but uses the same sensor so quality will be similar.

I own a few Fuji and none of them are good at video. The new Xrpo 2 seems good though but the price tag is too high, I'll wait for an xe3.

Thanks for the information, now the mystery is solved! In my opinion, if a camera has manual settings or preferences for the still image then they should apply to video aswell.
