Currently I'm using Canon 550D with Sigma 17-50mm F2.8. I'm looking for upgrade to FF camera, and from my budget D610 or 6D would be great choice. So I searched reviews about both camera and D610 looks better in terms of image quality. I tried both model in local store, found myself I got easily comfortable on 6D control but not so much on D610, probably because I'm Canon guy right now. So I bring this question here : should I buy Nikon D610 or Canon 6D?

This has been beaten to death but the D610 is much closer to a 5DM3 competitor (surpassing it in several ways too) than a 6D competitor - it blows the 6D out of the water. The Nikon menu system is super easy, you would learn it in no time at all. Totally up to you though, ergonomics are important too, but if you are asking what the best piece of equipment is technically, it's an easy choice. You need to also look at the entire system and see what lenses you see yourself buying in the future, etc. For the most part they are identical but there is the odd lens on either side that the other one doesn't offer.

It depends on how you plan on using your camera and which lenses your need?

The Canon 6D has the best sensor of any non-flagship Canon full frame body. At extremely high ISOs, it performs better than the D610 and D750. Dynamic range suffers, there's no pop-up flash to use for casual fill flash or as a slave trigger, there's no second memory card slot....

The choice really comes down to lenses. The Nikon 50mm F/1.8 G is literally the best $200 lens you can find from any brand. Canon does have the 40mm F/2.8 pancake and a whole lineup of longer portrait primes (100mm, 135mm L and 200mm L) that Nikon can't touch. It really depends on which lenses you select. There are categories where both Nikon and Canon are dead even in quality in price and other areas where one company doesn't even have a competitive product.

Can you define "performs better" at extremely high ISO's? Every professional review I have seen seems to disagree. The 6D has a hair more DR at very high ISO's, that's about it. Looking at DXO's detailed data for example, it's behind about a full stop, which is very significant, and the D610 retains color much better out to ISO 12,800+.

I am biased as a long-time Nikon shooter but here is my .02 of advice.

I often work/hire second shooters that work with canon. The difference in file quality is very clear between Nikon and Canon in my opinion. And my canon friends agree...

Low light, color right out of camera and ability to push and pull files. Nikon is hands down the clear winner.

Canon is great at pumping out model after model after model. Nikon doesn't make as many models but generally does a better job with their releases.

I am a Nikon guy, but I'm not a fanboy. I have the D610 and love it (see my Flickr if you want to see samples).

However, I believe the differences between the D610 and 6D are not huge. Both will be a noticeable upgrade for you, but shooting raw in average conditions - decent light, ISO 100-1600 - one will not strike you as clearly superior to the other. In that case the fit and feel, button layout, your familiarity, and of course your current lens investment could be reason alone to stick with Canon. But if you decide to switch to Nikon you won't be disappointed.

Ended up getting a D610 on a whim as a 6D even when both second hand was about £100-150 more.

On Ebay, ex Nikon FF kit lenses like the 24-85 and 24-120 are a bargain. Got an as new 24-120 f4 for £350.

Added a 35 f1.8 and an 85 f1.8. Have a nice basic kit.

So far, I'm amazed by the IQ I can get out of it. If I could have got a 6D at the same price I might have been tempted, but even if IQ is a draw between them, the Nikon is far more better specified.

Tbh, all I want is a D750 that takes my Canon lenses!

I went from canon to Nikon and made a similar choice that you did. Coming from a t2i, I debated between them all. I just don't see the value in canon right now. I wanted to go canon, I have canon gear, I just couldn't. The 6d on Adorama or any normal store with the 24-105 lens is 296.00 cheaper than a D750 with a 24-120 lense. I don't know how the 6D even still sells for this price! I'd gladly pay 296 more for the d750

I agree about the 6D high ISO, it is truly exceptional, i had mine when it first came out and it blew me away at ISO 26500 it was that good, i had the 1DX and 5D3 both had an excellent AF menu so many configurations to ones personal taste. I tend to jump ship when i feel, i don't have brand loyalty, i did not like the earlier Nikons of late, but when the D750 came out i stood back and took notice of the DR ect. The 6D has a simple AF, but saying that the centre point is accurate quick and excellent. Today i guess one is spoilt for choice, it all depends what you shoot and if one has any investment in any brand lens. One other thing the 6D only has one card slot, so that might be a problem or not, good luck with what ever you choose.

A camera is only as good as the lenses you can put on it and image quality also can require a good flash system that provides accurate mixed lighting pictures. Don't go by the camera alone.

In the past 15 years I have had 9 pro Nikon cameras and 3 pro Canon cameras. I have replaced only my two DX lenses the 17-55mm f2.8 and the 12-24mm f4, and two FX lenses, the 80-200mm f2.8 ED IF and the 80-400mm f4.5 VR I during that time.

My point is that cameras come and go but your investment in lenses will last you for years. Decide on the lenses that best serve your interests now and in the future.

For landscape and architectural photography I would go with Canon and for wildlife and sports photography I would also go with Canon. For macro and any photography utilizing flash (portraiture and product photography) I would go with Nikon.

I agree, having shot with Canon and now Nikon, its true cameras come and go and leap frog each other, i love my Nikon 80-400 VR, but would say its overpriced for what it is, its as good as my old 100-400LMK2 Canon, but the canon is cheaper and better made with weather seals.
