I am doing my homework on the type of camera I am going to buy looking at all the pros and cons of the Canon G5 and Nikon 5700.i keep coming accross this " purple fringing " problem that the G5 seems to have. Any opinions?

Pick up a G3. Save yourself a few bucks and get a better camera.

Don't worry about MP. It's not as big a deal as the marketing types want you to think it is. What you care about is the quality of each MP. 5MP cameras generally fall short.

No digicam (expect a Foveron) is exempt from fringing (CA), but the G3 is much better about it, compared to the G5. In addition lower MP cameras often operate faster and have better ISO performance.

If you offered a S40 (4MP) as a replacement to my S30 (3MP), I'd tell you to take a hike.

You can reduce fringing in both cameras by increaing the f no. smaller aperture. But G3 seems to have lesser fringing than the G5...

If you read the review done here, you'll find it is talked about on page 13 of the review. You'll also see example photos.

If you search the forum, you'll find it has been covered before. There were several who didn't seem too concerned about it. I wasn't as I just received mine.
