Nikon D5200 ai/ais lens

Actually the "D" lenses will meter but not focus, I have two of them I use infrequently with the D 5100. Personally I don't much care for the results.

How do you set aperture with D lens in the D5100? With the aperture ring or the dial?

If with the aperture ring, you set to high aperture value when mounting it, lock the ring, then how you stop down?

Hi.

You use the Dial.

You will not be able to shoot (the camera gives you a fEE-error message) if the aperture-ring is not set at highest aperture number. (The "Minimum Aperture Signal Tap" located at eight o'clock on the camera mount has to be pressed by the "EE Servo Coupling Post" on the lens.)

You have to remember, that stopping down is controlled by the camera and not by the lens on Nikons - except for the "E"-type lenses, that has an aperture step motor in the lens.

how the blades in the lens open when stop down? Using the dial and not the ring? The ring will permanently stay in f16 win't let the light come trough the lens.?

sorry my ignorance...

No - it certainly will not :-)

When you mount the lens, the aperture mechanism inside the camera mount opens up your lens to max aperture - no matter, what the lens is set to on the ring.

That's intended - you will always see through a full open lens (when speaking VF - in Live View, it's another case) and focus through a full open lens.

When you press the shutter-button from half to full - the aperture mechanisme closes the lens to the desired by the aperture controller inside your camera - or to the aperture set by the aperture-ring. That's why it has to be set to minimum aperture on the ring.

Now - using a lens with a cpu (the contacs) tells, that you want to use the cameras controller - and have the ability to meter the lens. In that case (using a lens with a cpu) the camera will then not let you use the lens aperture ring - not to make any confusions.

Using a lens without a cpu, you cant use the cameras controller - you will have to use the ring. The camera will give you a F-- error message - meaning no lens attached - but will allow you to shoot in exposure-mode "M".

You are not ignorant - you are just thinking "electronically" - where you have to think "mechanically" - Nikon in that way gives the ability to use lenses from long before the word "electronically" was invented :-)

Thank you!! I just have to take a shot to my face, and look at the blades close...

I've made this question because i've decided now what lens a will buy. Nikkor105mm f2.5 ai, ai-s.

will mount in myD5200, won't autofocus, neither will meter. I'll have the focus confirmation dot. its for portrait in most of the usage, and some street photo. (No moving objets ...)😕:-|

Wonder if flash work? In the view finder apears ttl, with my sigmas af. But with the ai,ai-s ?

The focus dot works with the Ai/Ais lenses. Set your shutter speed with the thumbwheel and turn the aperture ring on the lens to choose an aperture. Make sure you have chosen M ( manual ) mode on the selector dial. Either use a lightmeter pointing at the scene to tell you which combination of aperture and shutter speed to use to get proper exposure OR just do as I do, take a shot, look at the histogram in playback mode, adjust either aperture or shutter speed and take another shot and check histogram again. With practice and experience you should be able to nail the exposure with a couple of test shots each time.

Enjoy using these old lenses.
John,

If possible, Could you go into some detail as to how the histogram is used to adjust aperture or shutter speed. Like, what do you see or look for or not see that would dictate any adjustment one way or the other. Thanks in advance.
