Hello All,

I just bought a RX100 Mark 1 this week, I got it for a good price i think, there was an action at a local store and i also had some vouchers so I got it for 208€ (about $227).

Initially I wanted a Canon (G9X or G7X) because I bought Canon camera (compact) before and i was happy with it but after the reading of many reviews I decided to go for a Sony RX100, the store action convinced me.

I have a question also, what is the purpose of the 16:9 aspect ration except for showing on a TV ?

Here is some samples i made the first day.

I occasionally crop to 16/9 for a landscape but I do it in Lightroom so I guess you can do it in camera. I prefer to crop in post.

My TV and my computer monitors both handle 16:9 so that is my default setting on the camera. One thing to think about is if you use "P" mode, usually the shutter speed in lower light is 1/30. Sometimes I forget and the results "remind me"!

Do you print your photos via a web site ? What is the result on paper ?

Congrats on your purchase,

that's enough cat pics, now get out there and point it at something else!!!!

I wrote a super condensed manual and learning guide for the rx100m1, total 14 printable pages.

If you or anyone wants it, send $0.00 to ................

Send me a private message with your email, I will send it along.

Your images are overexposed. Did you have the display histogram option on when you were composing these photos? The histogram would have been shifted to the right, thus warning you of overexposure, and thus the need to compensate your exposure..

Whenever taking photos of a dark or black colored subject, you need to use negative exposure compensation in order to to make up for that. Otherwise, you end up with overexposed images like this.

It is just the opposite situation of taking photos of people on a white snowy hill or a beach with white sand, where you have to then use positive exposure compensation to increase your exposure.

Thank you i will activate this option but can you explain how to compensate in this case ?

I haven't printed photos in years, but when I did, I took them to Costco. I am sure there are better options today.

I put a section about Aspect Ratioos and Paper Sizes in my rx100m1 manual, copied here:

.....................................

IV ASPECT RATIO (camera image shape not size) (ratio of width to height) (paper ratios differ)

select aspect ratio to fit subject best or to fit best on monitor, tv, or intended print paper size

aspect RATIOS are given as width:height; can be shown or printed at any size, the SHAPE stays the same

3:2 (35mm film shape), (width is 1.50 x height) 3 x 4.5; 4 x 6; 5 x 7.5; 8 x 12; 12 x 18

16:9 (widescreen TV or LCD shape). (width is 1.78 x height) 3 x 5.34; 4 x 7.12; 5 x 9.9; 8 x 14.24; 12 x 21.36

4:3 (old TV or VGA monitor shape) (width is 1.33 x height) 3 x 4; 4 x 5,32; 5 x 6.65; 8 x 10.64; 12 x 15.96

1:1 (square or medium format camera shape) 3 x 3; 4 x 4; 5 x 5; 8 x 8.

TV and MONITOR RATIOS (widescreen ‘named’ monitors and tvs may not be exactly 16:9 ratio, (multiplier 1.78)

tv/monitor width pixels and height pixels can be different sizes, so viewed and exact/printed shape may be different

PAPER SIZES (paper ratios/shapes often differ from camera aspect ratios)

Paper Size Ratios 3 x 5 is 1.67 4 x 6 is 1.50 5 x 7 is 1.40 8 x 10 is 1.25 8.5 x 11 is 1.29

Closest Aspect Ratio 16:9 is 1.78 3:2 is 1.50 4:3 is 1.33 4:3 is 1.33 4:3 is 1.33

to calculate actual SIZE when viewed or printed use ‘MULTIPLIER’ method (width is ___ times the height)

i.e. 3:2 ratio: for height of 8”, multiplier of 1.50 means width will be 12”; if width is 8”, height will be 5.33” (8 div by 1.50)

i.e. 16:9 ratio: height of 8”, multiplier of 1.78 means width will be 14.24”; if width is 8”, height will be 4.49” (8 div by 1.78)

i.e. 4:3 ratio: height of 8”, multiplier of 1.33 means width will be 10.64”; if width is 8”, height will be 6.02” (8 div by 1.33)

....................................

I always buy monitors and TVs with black frames. Then, viewing any aspect ratio, the black frame blends together with any black bars on the image, so you see the image surrounded with black only (without a silver frame which makes the black bars very apparent).

I hate stretch, makes my favorite women look fat, and basketball players look like football players playing with an oval ball.

Enjoy your new RX100, they are lots of fun to use!

I bought the RX 100 I a little over a year ago and found that it was so small and slippery that I was afraid of dropping it. I bought the Sony grip for about $ 15 and it really made if feel better.

The wrist strap helps to make the fear of dropping the camera go away.
