Please can someone help, all this talk of making slideshows as convinced me that to make a slide show without flicker is to buy a DVD writer, I have with the new dvd writer and Photoshow 2 the photos, now are good.
The DVD writer is a Phillips model no is DVDRW288 now £100 in PC WORLD.

The problem when I try to drop a file onto the DVD window to copy it I can’t it won’t allow it, nor drag a file too the bin, I think it’s called packet writing, I think the included software as a program for this called Nero incd.

Thing is my operating system is XP and there is software built in for this and I don’t want to cause conflict, so have not loaded it.
Someone got any ideas, please help, my nails are already past the quick.
Thanks in advance.
Ralph.

Celtic Yop,

The last couple of weeks I have been investigating DVD writers not specific for slide shows but for data files storage in general.
First you have to look what media you are going to use, you have 4 types:
dvd-r, dvd+r, dvd-rw, dvd+rw. The one you use, it depends on your needs.

In all case you need to load addtional software on your Windows XP to be able to support your DVD writer. XP has no support for DVD writers only for CD writers.

-If you want other softwares to recogize your DVD DVD-R and +R as another rewriter media, the best software I found is 'Easy CD creator 5' from Roxio, in case you want copy data to the DVD+-R media it emulate this recordable media as you are using a floppy drive or any other rewriteable media. You can just use your windows explorer or any other application to copy and delete files onto this recorderable media. 'Nero Incd' has a similar approach but I tried it for CDR's and it was much too slow. (you have to format the recordable media to recognize this as a rewritable drive, which is much faster with Roxio, maybe Nero have improved lately!)
  • Roxio 5.2 is also good for DVD +-RW.
  • If you want to use a standalone application to write to your DVD+-R, Nero burning software 5.5 is very good. It support multisession copying very well but it is not good for DVD+-RW, in this case you are better of with Roxio 5.2.
You have other softwares around, like Gear DVD (very good support for DVD writer) and others but it depends on your need to find the best applications.

By the way I could place 3 DVD writer application on my windows XP without any conflict, so far I could see.

I'm also aware of Roxio 6.0 and Nero 6.0 but I rather wait for somebody else to find the problems with these new releases.

I hope this helps.

Sorry a little correctiion: the rewriteable emulation software from Roxio calls "CD Direct" (part of 'Easy CD creator') which is the counterpart of "Incd" from Nero.

I have always used Nero, but now I have Windows XP it makes sense to install Easy CD creator I suppose, seeing as part of it is already built into XP. The reason I was reluctant to install INCD because of conflict. If I download a trial of easy CD creator, it should not cause conflict, as it’s their program. And the fact that my DVD burns DVD+R OR RW.
Incase I want to go the Nero way, how do I disable CD direct?
Once again thanks.
Ralph.

Celtic Yop,

Easy CD creator can not be disabled so far I know and if it resides with Incd both software tries to seek control, if it creates some conflict I'm not sure.

In my previous message I was referring to Nero Burner software against Easy CD creator which doesn't create a conflict but Incd maybe problematic.

Anyway I think Easy CD creator is the way to go. I just read the new documentation from Incd and it still takes ages (up to 120minutes) to format a CD or a DVD and it only support ReadWrite media.

I had a look at the Roxie web sight, they recon it takes over 3 hours to download a trial. Went to Nero sight, much quicker. Therefore, I have a demo of Nero 6 installed. It allows me to drop files onto the DVD window and it copies them, as I write this its formatting a CD writer and by the look of it, will take 15 minutes to format or there about. About disabling CD creator by the look of it, no need Nero does it on installation, No conflict so far.

I’ll give this a go; I can use it until the end of August and read up on both in the meantime.
Thanks Jan for taking the trouble to respond to my problem.

Celtic Yob,

Your are welcome.

If you just want to drop file to a DVD+-R, Nero Burner software is a very good solution, I found it the best software for multisession recording on a +R and -R media.

You can install your own packet writing software to support drop and drag recording to you cd writer. I use Record Now Max's drop and drag recording module and it works without conflicting at all. You can pull up the properties of the cd writer and click the recording tab. There you can change the recording options for drop and drag. I am talking about WinXP. Cant comment of the other versions of Windows.

Well now what

I installed Nero 6 and found I can’t drop a file onto the DVD writer window. The way to copy is as it always was with Nero, get the explorer type, Nero window up and drag files to it, and it copies and burns ok .One flaw right click on properties on the DVD icon and it don’t show the amount used and free just a completely blue circle.

I was going to get Roxio Easy DVD creator 6 as Jan suggested, but.

I might one day want to copy a DVD of a film I bought as a backup, I don’t think Easy DVD creator will allow it, but Nero might?

I did want the facility to be able to drag files to the window and it is copied as I said.

Now Jason Edwards as stepped in and said, I can keep Nero and still have this facility
With Record Now Max's drop and drag recording module.

Were do you get Holt of it, and how much is it?

I have Windows XP and looking at the form in the properties window for my DVD writer I cannot see were to set it to use this software as drag and drop.

Is it that bit in the middle where it says select a drive where windows can store an image of the CD?
Thanks for the impute.
Ralph.

should not cause conflict, as it’s their program. And the fact that
my DVD burns DVD+R OR RW.
Incase I want to go the Nero way, how do I disable CD direct?
Once again thanks.
Ralph.

Hey,

You can get RecordNow Max as http://www.stompinc.com

When you install it, it asked if you want to install their version of packet writing software. When you do this, it disables the built in version. Once this is installed, when you check the properties of the cd/dvd writer it adds a tab that lets you control their version. Once that happens you can disable one or the other depending on which one you want to use.

Hey,

Forgot to reply about your other question. I dont know about Nero as I have never used it so I dont know if it puts the tab on the properties window of your cd/dvd writer. The record tab on the properties form controls the built in recording. When you install Recordnow it adds another tab that will let you control their recording software. If you decide you want to go back to Roxio's, just click the tab and disable RecordNow's software and then click the record tab and enable recording to cd writer.

I hope I am explaining this ok. When I go back and read my messages, I sometimes wonder if I am any good at explaining anything.

Hi Celtic Yob. Nero will not perform backups of original DVD movies due to encryption. There is a process to go through or other software.

Hi all

Well I took the bit between my teeth, went down too Cardiff and bought Easy DVD creator. Cost me £49 but as I only paid £100 for the Philips DVD rewriter it’s still reasonable compared to what some have paid for this same drive.

Easy DVD creator works ok it’s a treat for storing large files on, and works like a hard drive.

Jason you explained it great, but like I said, I just as well by the whole caboodle and finish with it.

Col, reading what you just said do that mean if I acquire the other software I can use Easy DVD creator to burn it?

Thanks all for the help

If you are looking for an easy software package to copy DVD's with try DVD X Copy Express from http://www.321studios.com

It will copy the movie with the menus and extra content. Its very easy to use and the software does all of the work so you dont have to use a 2nd program to do the burning. Copy quality is pretty good to.

Why pay $s again on another burning program? Use DVDShrink (freeware) to rip and transcode, then burn the iso with Easy DVD Creator. Ok the quality will be deminished very slightly as a result (DVD X Copy also) but using the backup DVD will prevent damage to the original. Good site for how to's http://www.dvdrhelp.com/ .

I only suggested X Copy for 1 program 1 click simplicity. I know there are other ways to do it for free, you just have to use several programs. I think $60 is not bad for what X Copy does and again its extemely easy to use with good results.

The only single click is that of a wattet snapping shut after shelling out another $60+ needlessly. LOL. But yea there are easier solutions though I have not tried X Copy. To answer your question Celtic Yob, if you download DVDShrink and follow the tutorial in my previous link you can backup your discs using Easy DVD. Let the kids scratch the backup and save the original from harm.

Reading the details on how to rip a DVD from the link provided by Col Winfield. I have downloaded a copy of DVD shrink to try. Although not at the moment as were are having a heat wave, well to us in the UK it is 30 centigrade.
