Hi,

Just bought a sony A7R2 with sony 55mm f1.8.

But phase detection is not working with this lens.
I have a metabones canon EF - sony E mount mark IV also, and phase detection works on all of my canon lenses. But not the native sony lens without adapter.

Sony support can't even give me a webpage where I can see if a lens is Fast Hybrid AF and can use the phase detection and things like EYE AF.

They send me to a stupid compatibility page where I can list my body and see if the lens is compatible. The only thing it says is that distortion function on lens will be set on auto.

link: https://support.d-imaging.sony.co.jp/www/cscs/lens_body/index.php

So, no solution there...

Can anyone tell me where I can see if a lens has this function or not?
Or people with same combo having same problem? I just like to know.

ps. Don't get me wrong, its a fantastic body and lens! But I would have liked to know in advance it wouldn't work.

Thanks

How do you know it doesn't work?

Set the autofocus to af-c, focuszone to wide and there must be these dancing little squares. If you have that pdaf is working.

Just another thing, are there fw updates for this lens?

Might be best to ask over on the e-mount full frame forum. There's some here who own both but most of us just have APS-C NEX/aXxxx. The folks over there should have more experience and hopefully better advice (though the answer you have so far sounds pretty good :))

No dancing squares...
pdaf not working.

I checked the Firmware versions and this was all latest firmware.

Thanks for this tip. Wasn't aware of the other forum.
I'll wait and see if there comes something up I didn't know yet, if not, I'll post it over there!

all the best,
Quinten

Note that you only see the dancing squares if you have that enabled. Somewhere in the settings you can set it to show the dancing squares.
I understand ;)
Phase detection is working fine on my canon lenses when using a metabones canon/sony mark4.
So I know it has nothing to do with the body or settings on body.

Where the OP says his FE55/1.8 works with PDAF on his A6000. While not the A7R2 it indicates that the FE55 is supposed to work with PDAF.

More and more, I start to think I need to pay a visit to the store again and let them figure it out.
It's clear, on my a7r2 it does not work. I'm almost shure, when I tried it in store with same type lens on display, pdaf worked. But once home, only the chunky contrast af was working.
Since I'm new to the sony a7 and it focus system, I did not notice right away.

Thanks for this post.

I'm curious though, apart from the dancing squares, is there another way to see if PDAF is not being used?

Yes, when you go in settings to Focus System, you are not able to select PDAF.
Also EYE AF will not work, and give a lens error.

It is greyed out? Maybe it is on by default

I see. On A6000 you can't even see that setting.

No, it gives a lens error if I try to acces the menu. Not available with this lens it says.
Believe me, its not on ;)

The Focus System menu only affects EA1/EA3 adapters and Canon adapters that emulate them. It is not applicable to native lenses (it doesn't even exist on pre-A7RII bodies, which DO offer PDAF/hybrid AF with native lenses)

Eye AF is a CDAF functionality - but a lens error when you select it makes me think maybe you have a defective lens?

Are you sure the LENS firmware is up to date?
