Post your US D500 launch event findings here - Part Three

... For me, personally, this supports what my thoughts were at the 3 events I attended..
Bill, you are the reason I know that the Nikon guy reads these forums... he mentioned, "There is this guy in Seattle who went to 3 launch events..." :-D
I may have missed something, but the fact that Nikon knows there's a guy in Seattle who went to three launch events doesn't mean that they got the info from DPReview.

Alternative sources of info are:

1) The same reps were at all three events and remember a guy from Seattle who was at all three.

2) Nikon collect data about who attends, and have analysed attendees who have been to more than one event.

3) Bill told one of the reps at the last event that he went to that it was the third he'd been to.

I actually mentioned this forum to them, I believe at the second one. Now I have no clue whatsoever it any of this got passed, of if they actually do bother to look, I just think it is all good fun, other than having to wait until the end of April, which is NO fun at all. This is worse than it was when I used to wait for Santa Clause :-x

Although I don't think I'm quite as excited about the D500 as you are, I'm certainly enjoying all the advance snippets of info, and will probably not be able to resist at some stage.

My point was just that luxun's optimistic conclusion that Nikon are reading DPR doesn't necessarily follow from his observation that they knew about you having attended 3 launch events.

Can't you make it four? :-)

I MIGHT be able to make it to the event in Spokane tonight :-D But to be fair to others, I think I will leave my seat open.

Actually, he was explicit in the conversation about reading dpreview forums.

Thanks for the clarification. Your post:

"Bill, you are the reason I know that the Nikon guy reads these forums... he mentioned, "There is this guy in Seattle who went to 3 launch events...""

gives the impression that this was the statement that led you to the conclusion that Nikon reps read DPR, whereas it was the fact that they told you explicitly.

Enjoy your D500 when it arrives :-)

Well, I just tried to reply to Jemini in Part Two and it is full, so let's start Part Three!

Regarding testing AF speed and accuracy, I just don't see how you can do this in any reliable fashion at a Launch Event, glad you found one to go to.

We don't have the type of subject, erratic and fast moving, nor do we have the distance and lighting. Yes, you can get a "feel", but unless you are taking another body with the same lens and you can use a stop watch, I just don't know that you can get any reliable confirmation on speed and accuracy. Also there are a whole bunch of new AF options that can affect this as well.

Given the changes in each of the last generations, this is the last thing I am concerned about.

Excellent rreport my HIGH ISO expectations are also low (1/3 of a stop better than d7200).

I think it was reported before but still dont have it clear:

if you shoot, you have te option on saving the images (while shooting) in the SD card as backup? Or you can only backup the images after you stop shooting?

does shooting and saving the images in the two memory card while shooting slows down the FPS?

Thanks

It's better to keep it this way. That way you won't be disappointed for sure, but possible can be excited when you get the camera :)

I didn't ask about this specifically yesterday. But I'm positive I know the answer. In current cameras we can write to both cards at the same time. So you don't have to backup manually.

It doesn't slow down the FPS. But the total buffer size and how fast the camera empty the buffer will be equal to that of slower card. I'm planning to use the camera this way. So my buffer will be around 70+ (14-bit losless compressed). This is how D4 worked and from other threads here they didn't change it. So I'm confident.

Thank you for the well written report! Good observations.

I am trying to keep my expectations low but it sure looks like the D500 will be my next camera.

Many thanks, this is very informative. I also have a 300mm PF, and it's good to know what improvements to expect. The Auto AF Tune looks like an easy function to use – and definitely a very useful one.

1. ISO - This is something I'm sure people are tired of hearing :) But I have to mention this. My expectations were very low. I'm still thinking I should not expect too much from D7200. But when I looked at LCD, I could not help thinking this is at least 2 stops better than 7200. It could be LCD and/or new NR. Anyhow 6400 on D500 was looked better that 1600 on 7200. I zoomed in more than 100% still the details was amazing. There was some noise in OOF areas. But not bad at all. I took the name tag on rep's t-shirt and zoomed in 200%. It was a deep blue t-shirt with white letters. I could see the threads on writing and t-shirt didn't have that mushy look. The only light source was a regular incandescent bulb. I also tried lots of faces. All was amazing. Now I need a therapy to bring down my expectation :). Rep said he doesn't know exact numbers as these are pre-prod models. But he mentioned D5 might be 2 stops better than D4 and D500 also is better even in RAW. Hard to believe though..

later. Time to go to work

I completely agree, anything over 6400 is a big "happy dance" for me :-D

For some strange reason I was thinking of one of your cameras when I saw that profile. At least you now know why moving away was not a good idea :-D;-):-P Although, in truth, it does give you a very interesting perspective.

My other thoughts.

We will see shortly who are the April fools, but your observations are consistent with my few minutes last month on the high ISO. Frankly if the LCD is better/sharper just compared to my rare peeping of D4/D810 dang I will be happy. Wouldn't a sharper higher contrast screen highlight noise/blotch colory than a low resolution screen which would be similar to downsizing?

Of course maybe there is some Jedi Knight saying " images are better" " two stops " to all the launch attendees :-)

How is the AF using the touch scree in live view?
