Technology does not take good photos, people do.

Vinny, I quite like the idea for the image but technically it's not there for me. In the main ring standing up, on the lower row of diamonds, the second from the right has a bad reflection. The top row at the right is blown. The large diamond is blown out at the top and there's very little detail in there. I'd wanting to be seeing all the cuts of that large diamond. Are you using a macro lens? You'll need one to really draw out the details on this. The right side of the main ring also has a lot of busy reflections which you should be able to prevent. I'm also not keen on the second ring being slightly out of focus with some blown highlights. Jewellery, particularly white gold and gems, is extremely difficult to get the lighting and reflections right.

Funny you should post this, Vinny, as I was messing around a few days ago, trying to get a reasobale shot of a ring with a little compact FujiFilm X30. In macro mode you have to shoot with the lens at 28mm so you're literally nearly touching the subject, which in this case was one of my late mother's sapphire rings. I tore my hair out trying to get the lighting right on a table in my conservatory, late evening. Darn good job I had some red wine handy! Here are the two shots which were remotely usable but far from perfect:

SNOOD! FujiFilm X30 (With B&W 10 Diopter Lens) – Sapphire & Diamond Ring Challenge

In the first shot above I used the back off my wife's hairdryer to lie the ring on (I kid you not) to allow me to get some light from below, up into the stones. Without it the sapphires were fairly dull and flat looking.

Mastering A FujiFilm X30 (With B&W 10 Diopter Lens) – Sapphire & Diamond Ring Challenge

I used a diopter lens to get a bit more detail from the X30 lens. I'm going to revisit that ring with my X-T1 and macro lens in the near future.

Thx! those are all easy fixes as I did notice the overexposure spots. I will fix that 100%. The designer made it to me that this shot is about the bigger ring, not so much the smaller one, so made it a tad bit out of focus. This is however my first ring shot, and I must say I struggled for a LONG time, I was getting frustrated. The thing is that I cant go back and redo this. I had to document the entire process of a ring design and this being the final shot, I was there for hours. So the good thing is, overexposure in this image is easy to fix, thank god.
Yes, good luck with it. I do a lot of watch photography and that was also a pain to get to grips with, especially with the polished metal cases and domed sapphire glass. It's quite fun, though and the challenge is part of why we love photography. It'll be interesting to see your final image. Do post it!

If you had a spot light, or a point source light, you could show some dispersion on the diamonds. As it is, I have to say it all looks like so much tin foil.
