@Canon: Next G3X MkII with 8 fps AF tracking…

And enough buffer.

Stop crippling the capabilities of this wonderful camera!..

Otherwise Nikon DL24-500 will eat your cake.
I really want the G3 X but feel compelled to wait to see what the DL24-500 is like since it sounds like it fixes all the G3 X's shortcomings.

20 fps with AF tracking is no problem for Nikon as they've proved with Nikon 1 system.

The question is whether DL24-500 lens is on par with G3X lens?

Not an easy task!

Nikon compacts are well known for having sharp lenses. I'd say the DL24-500 will be the same.

Fast operation, EVF and 4K video make it a very compelling option.

The G3X has a more discreet lens barrel size, 100mm extra reach and is weather sealed.

Still prefer the looks of the G3X over the new Nikon. In saying that it certainly does look like Nikon has addressed some of the issues I have with the G3X such as a better focusing system... At least sounds good on paper and the bonus of 4K which canon seems to forget it exists. Having said that I'm happy with 1080p but the option would have been nice

Does this Nikon do usb charging? as I feel using video would benefit immensely from it

Personally what I don't like of the Nikon is the vari angle screen and eye piece as their other newly announced 1 inch cameras do it better

I like how the G3X has an optional eye piece and that I don't have to have the screen protrude so far to the side - that's just me.

Currently, none of GX camera is attractive.
Perhaps, to you; but to me the G3X is extremely attractive and one of the best cameras I've ever owned.

I agree with your points here... I like the G3X look, size, tilt screen. In addition, 4k doesn't matter to me and and I also like the longer G3X lens, weather sealing, 100% LCD coverage, and the removable tilt EVF.

That being said for a lot of people the Nikon's AF advantages could be enough to trump any advantages the G3X has. Nikon 1 AF is impressive and I assume this will be similar.

Mario,

It looked like you had finally got the camera of your dreams. Yes, I was following your path through all those bridge cameras you tried, as your opinion I have been always seriously considering. But now it looks like you are going to fall in love with this newest Nikon. Well, I still keep my, long time obsolete, Sony H5. So, is it now time for me to exchange it for this Nikon?

Regards,

Peter

That and 20 fps in raw with AFC vs 0.8 fps in raw with AFC.

The G3x was always too slow to consider.

Now it's practically dead and burried.

Hi Peter

I am happy with my G3X (nice and compact, weather sealed and cant get enough reach) and will not be getting the DL24-500.

Should you upgrade? YES.

I'm not sure how you've been putting up with 36mm "wide", but if you're happy with the 432mm reach of the H5, then the Nikon will suit you.

The DL24-500 is quite possibly the best all-round camera today.

edit: ah, I see your S90 gets a workout instead ;)

Thanks Mario,

Well my Canon S90 is just "carry it always" camera, as it is small enough and not so bad at all, though I am thinking about its replacement as well. Those newest Nikon cameras attract me most. However, my "main" camera is the Pentax DSLR. I like especially my latest K-S1 (the camera, which got spitted on the most, out of all digital cameras :-) ), as it is a wonderful camera and with good lenses (which I have as well) can't be beaten with any smaller-sensor cameras. But I am still looking for a universal camera/camcorder, which would suit me as the single traveling tool. It seems like the DL 24-500 might be it. However, the newest 1" Panasonic is so much smaller...

Regards,

Peter

+1. The great thing about a fixed lens camera is that you don't have to worry about an evolving system and whether you made the right long term choice in a system and whether or not to keep buying into that system. My Sony RX100 is the same way.... new and better versions and competing models come along but my RX100 just keeps on doing what I need it to do. I think my G3X is going to be the same way.

I thought the K-S1 looked pretty cool. The main thing is that you enjoy it and from all reports it takes great images, so who cares what others think.

I am very interested in the Panasonic TZ/ZS100 as a pocket camera for when I dont want to carry a camera. So far, its looking good.

Canon's powershot firmware developers are simply insane.

no reason the powershots were that slow.

I'm excited to see the DL's .. canon seems to only consider Nikon "real" competition .. so this will drive canon to get off their posteriors and improve their cameras spec wise.

Granted most of the people in this segment are jpg shooters, but still it needs faster FPS for us raw shooters.

For similar specs, Nikon lens is too big compared to Canon g3x.
