Pentax smcP FA 31mm f/1.8 Limited Lens - US $718

Price is still up at B&H, but probably not for long - grab it while you can!

There's no bad bokeh, just background that's too close.

Some testing sights have reported less than stellar results, so if one is inclined to purchase, it might be best to go with the Made in Japan version. Being such a big fan of this lens, I would have thought you would have mentioned as much.
I'm new to Pentax and seriously considering the K-1. I've been following Lloyd Chambers' coverage, as he's very interested in what the K-1 has to offer (he's written some very early/tentative praise for the camera, maybe inching toward hyperbole!). Since his K-1 loaner hasn't arrived yet, he's been using a K3 II in order to get a feel for pixel shifting and what it may mean for the K-1.

Here's what he had to say about the 31mm:

http://diglloyd.com/blog/2016/20160223_2240-PentaxK3_II-ZeissSiemens.html

"That Pentax 31/1.8 did not cut the mustard, so I used the Sigma 35/1.4, and some commentary on that matter is also included."

It can't be emphasized enough that this test was of a start chart -- this really says nothing of rendering, character, bokeh, etc. Simply an acuity test for pixel shifting.

Much of the content on his site requires a subscription, so I didn't get to read the full commentary on the 31mm.

Regardless, my hesitation to jump feet first into FF Pentax hasn't been assuaged after reading about a very limited FA/D FA lineup.

I've been debating 31 vs 77 since the K-1 announcement, and I think I'd probably go with the 77mm anyway.

Hi folks,

IMO, the Pentax smcP FA 31mm f/1.8 Limited Lens (Black) is currently one of the best buys at BHPhotovideo.com. It is currently listed with an instant savings of US $378 for a total cost of US $718. I do believe that this price is the lowest I have ever seen it. If I didn't already own one I would surely jump on this one right now.

FWIW: The Pentax smcP FA 31mm f/1.8 Limited Lens is a FF lens.
Today I see that the price of the Pentax 31mm f/1.8 jumped to US $1097 at both BHPhotovideo, com and Adorama.com

Yup, the chicken bones told me so. :D

You can still get it from amazon marketplace sellers for $821, but you'd have to wait a few days for them to get stock. I have to be honest - $1100 is no longer a reasonable price for this item when there is a brilliant Sigma 18-35 zoom with that same aperture for $300 less. Both lenses have their faults, sure, but don't get fleeced, folks!

B&H price is back up to $1,099.95. Luckily I just bought a pristine MIJ version for almost half that today. Look forward to getting it!

I would look at the size and weight comparison with the Sigma - that's the only thing that took it out of consideration for me in the past.

That review sure starts out pretty poorly, but some people really like shooting test charts. For taking pictures you can't go wrong with the FA limiteds. 77 and 31 are very different focal lengths, so go with what you need. Most of their weaknesses should be correctable with a little post processing.

Regarding the prices going back up, I would wait for another sale or grab used copies - 31mm is going for around $650.

I wonder why the 100mm wr is still sitting so low? Such a steal right now.
