Has any had this problem with their 28-135 IS?

I just recently purchased a 28-135IS and it doesn't go to 28mm f/3.5? It stays constant on f/5.6? I can lower the aperature to f/5.6-f/22 but I can't go any higher (ie. f/3.5-f/5.6), is this normal?

and see if that works. Sometimes it just needs a jumpstart. It should be OK from then.

I have seen this on a Tokina 19-35. Luckily I was at the store and asked for a new one.

I just tried that, and it still won't let me go to f/3.5. It's at f/5.6 in all modes. I'll just have to send it back.

Thanks,

You put the camera in M mode and the lens at 28mm and you can't dial in f3.5?? Or are you in some other mode and can't reach f3.5? It just doesn't seem likely that the lens would have that kind of an error.

Just got a call back from my "seller". They said something was really wrong with this lens. They tried it on both a film body and a digital body, and same thing. But on the film body it wouldn't even focus at 28-35mm. I guess here's where the Canon Quality Control should have come in. You would think they would test the lenses before they ship them...hmmm...??? Just a thought.

So to everyone out there, check your lenses very well before you buy (if you buy in store. I couldn't because it was on-line.....)

I went ahead and ordered a used 28-70 for $650.00, which they guaranteed me that it works.

Thanks for all those who posted and tried to help!

I want to make sure I stay away from them. Did they expect the lens to magically heal it self?

As bad as the return practice at Fry's, B&H, Canoga Camera and others, at least they separate the bad items and send them back to the vendor (RTV). The good ones (supposedly) are returned to stock (RTS) to be sold again maybe for the 6th or 8th time. With the "VERYcareful" handling of UPS, it is possible for the lens to get out of allignment or damage the internal circuitry after riding in the back of the truck for 25,000 miles.

I would not put all the blame on Canon QC, but somehow keep an open mind to test and return the defective item within the warranty/exhange period.
