Good job Sony! But now it's time to build up a professional flash system for A7RII/A7II

As i professional i really need the AF-assist light to be enabled! Please Sony!

As a construction i'd like the new flash to be smaller and lighter than the HVL-F43M with the same power and with wireless module like the Nissin Di700 Air+ commander...
Why not get the Nissin flashes, since they come with the new Sony flash hot shoe?

Labelling them Sony and doubling the price doesn't make them more professional.

Also, most profesionals that work with flashes on a daily basis are using studio flash systems and battery pack flashes.

Maybe we should insert the word "reliable" in your petition to Sony.

I am also searching for a good flash system but both the phottix mitros+ and nissin Di700a seems to have a lot of negative feedbacks when it comes to reliability.

What actually is this negative feedback about, and what is the problem?

Doesn't the flashes fire properly, or is the problem getting a good exposure?

in case you haven't noticed thenaf assist on NEX and a7 cameras is different from DSLR cameras. That is why the on flash AF assist light is no good for the new cameras sorry

Also AF assist is not really making the flash system professional

third the Nissin Air is available for Sony and if you like it buy it. I have tried it and it works well

fourth other companies are also building TTL and HSS enabled flashes with remote control e.g phottix

I just wish they had had a built in commander to fire any flashes without being on the hot shoe. A built in flash would.also be great.

Or Phottix Mitros (and Odins are coming for Sony soon too)

If there was a built-in flash then the camera would be bigger and the battery life even less than currently.

Not many full frame cameras have a built in flash. I think the manufacturers leave the choice of what flash - if any - up to the photographer.

But I agree that a wireless commander option, even if you need an external device, should be possible given the wireless and NFC connectivity options.

Most of it are malfunction. The flash isn't firing correctly or doesn't fire at all. Sometimes it works for 1 day then doesn't work the day after. Etc.

Check out the Mitros+ reviews in amazon, 31% gave it 1star out of 5stars.

This holds true for the Nissin Di700a as well.

Some quotes from amazon:

Mitros+

Oct 2015 - "I have three of these Mitros+. This will be my 3rd failure all separate units. One was DOA out of the box. It was exchanged with a new one no problem. The second had a faulty zoom. Sent it in and came back repaired but with scratches on it from where they took it apart to make repairs. Now on my third failure. Misfires 50% of the time. The next time one fails it goes in the round file. It's too bad. It all started out so well."

Oct 2015 - "The flash is damaged does not fires and it did not came with the Stofen.
Very disappointing."

Sept 2015 - "MHO, this is over-designed. It can't keep up with what it's supposed to do, flash when you need it. And I wasn't asking much. 2500 ISO, dialed down to 3 stops under, at 2.8, and it fired every third or 4th time. I sooooooo wanted to believe this would be the answer to my problems but alas. I wish Phottix would design something where I could have the option to have a flash on camera, for fill, whilst trigging slaves. So sad."

July 2015 - "ts been 2 and a half months and one of my two units is misfiring. In fact it hardly triggers at all 1 of about every 5 shots it will actually fire. I use these in conjunction with the Odin trigger, which since day one has never been able to control the remote zoom adjustment functionality. These units have been treated very well, though they do get daily use as a part of my real estate workflow. I need reliability. When my equipment fails, I fail."

Nissin Di700a

Jan, 2106 - "I purchased 3 different sets at different times and from two different sources. All three had the same issue. They worked fine initially but then the next day it took 5-15 attempts to get them to turn on again. When they did turn on the units had to be bound or synced again."

Jan 2016 - "I often have trouble syncing or re-syncing the units. The Commander often starts to flicker and then loses it sync. The flash often takes multiple minutes to turn on (it's odd, but I sometimes have to press the on button 10 or 12 times to get it to turn on)."

Jan 2016 - " used this for two shoots, the first went great, good pairing, ttl seemed to work fine.

Second shoot, I got two shots, changed nothing with the settings, took the 3rd shot, nothing. Tried changing the range, resetting the channels, tested the batteries, flash worked fine in the camera for the next 50 pictures ..."

Dec 2015 - "I've ordered three of these units, and two of them refuse to power on after using the flash for a short while, then turning them off. I have to remove the batteries place them back in and continuously press the power button until the unit finally turns on. I've attempted to use these units for a photoshoot, but was highly disappointed."

Despite the bad reviews, I still want to try one of them since there's really no other option. It's a gamble hoping that we get a good unit. I'm thinking now if I should get the Mitros+ or the Nissin.

The Nissin is much cheaper: (for Sony)

On Camera = $250 (Flash)

Off Camera = $300 (Flash + Air 1)

The Mitros+ is much more expensive: (for Sony)

On Camera = $400 (Flash w/ internal)

Off Camera = $600+ (Flash + Odin I/II)

What do you think? Which should I get? Let's say both are working as advertised, Is the Mitros+ worth 2x the price of the Nissin?

I would add on the Di700a the build quality is unacceptably poor. In particular the hotshot is far too fragile for the weight of the flash. In fact it is too fragile for the Air Commander and chipped off exposing the connection wires. The Di700a hotshot simply broke off. Certainly not a professional and didn't use it much.

For studio the fact that Godox is bringing out a ttl/has trigger is quite exciting. Hopefully this will work with their speed liters too.

I really don't understand why Sony hasn't done this yet. It seems like making a good integrated wireless flash system would be trivial for an electronics giant like Sony. Customers are waiting to buy these products, but instead we have a wireless microphone and no wireless flash.

we have no problem with that.

I have noticed... that's why i say we need a new flash system expressly made for mirrorless!!
Also AF assist is not really making the flash system professional
I'm a professional and i work a lot in in really dark environments, the lack of a working af assist light from flash is the only reason i still have to keep my nikon system instead of switching completely to sony! So yes, for me and many others i know this is a professional feature...

i already have the nissin Air and nissin i40, i use the i40 much more because of the compactness but they are both far than professional for various reason: build quality and impossibility to use an external power being the two most obvious...

Here my petition to Sony for the external flash AF assist light support:

https://www.change.org/p/sony-corpo...utm_source=share_petition&utm_medium=copylink
Buy a $5 light to help with AF-assist.

Use a portable strobe. Profoto and broncolor make some great portable lights.

I agree that Sony need to up their flash game, but if you're a professional losing income because Sony hasn't made a suitable flash, then I'd suggest investing into a third party.

Thx for suggestion... i don't loose any income because i still use Nikon as my main camera, mostly for that reason, and keep small sony with fast primes for ambient light. I really love my Nikon D810 so i can't really complain here but i'd really like to switch completely to mirrorless because it better fits my shooting style...

Right, for studio work my A7RII already get a lot of use...now i use the D810 only when i need a particular lens that i still don't have in sony FE version like the 70-200 f2,8 for example.

As hobbyist, I am glad I bought my Di700A kit and would recommend it for several use cases, but at the same time it often makes mad when either the Air1, the Di700A or the camera don´t talk nicely to each other (too often).

This happens a lot, making me miss many moments (and therefore unsure I would use it for pro work, highly dependent on reliable gear):

Yes i had the same experience a couple of times by the way i still consider the 700 air a really good product with some limitations (AF assist does not work with mirrorless and it doesn't work with external powerpack)... the Nissan i40 is much more reliable and light and offer Hss but it is not enough power in most cases...

Given the dates on the poor Amazon reviews on the Mitros I'd guess those were old ISO units with adapters (I could be wrong)I use a Mitros and a "+" unit (both with the multi-interface shoe) with my a6K bodies in a professional environment. On camera, off camera, in just about any configuration, I've had no errors from the flash (User error is another thing). I highly recommend them and am looking forward to shipping of the OdinII later this year.
