I dip in and out of POTW but that's due to my not shooting enough, not to my not liking the format. In fact, the existence of this thread has occasionally got me out shooting when I might otherwise not have done so.

I'd be concerned that extending the term of each POTW thread to a month would reduce participation rather than increase it. It seems too long a period to remain fresh and to keep participants coming back, either to check on the additions to the thread or to check on the voting. (Or maybe I'm missing the point and you're really talking about accepting images up to a month old rather than talking about extending the term of the thread, in which case -- never mind!)

Opening the thread to other cameras makes sense and should, over time, increase the pool of photographers contributing to the thread and maybe even to the forum.

I like the two week window. Keeps it fresh. Of course I am in awe of the shots that consistently come from some of the folks. Something to aspire to.

My understanding is that currently, images taken in the 2 week period prior to the posting of the POW thread are eligible for entry. I suggested extending that to 4 weeks before the commencement of the thread. The thread itself would still run for one week only for posting and voting.

This is the Arrow River that borders our town of Arrowtown in NZ. The river is really low this year due to probably the best summer in decades, no rain for three weeks or so. While wandering the banks looking for an ideal photo spot I noticed a swarm/flock/gathering/flight/gaggle of about 20 trout in the pool in the distance. They were rising in the pool for flies. So cool!

In the end the photo didn't matter.

Please take the time to view all entries in the Original or largest size. The compression on DPR is awful!

.. I don't see any birds.

;-)
True but there's more here than the eye first sees. I was was sorta birdspeaking in code. Glad you noticed David, I thought it may have flown over a few people's heads.

The decorative looking grass on the right is a toitoi. If you look carefully you can see a kiwi waving his beak saying 'gidday cobber'.

Still field testing my "new" refurb D7200 from Adorama

So far, a couple of members have been talking about extending the deadline to four weeks from the current two. There has been no talk of reducing the frequency of the thread.

That is my thought about ending the Nikon camera restriction and a well stated point. So, I will refund your other penny.

I think part of the problem right now is time of year for many of the people who come here and weather restrictions. I know many of you go out and shoot in all types of weather and it is summer for some of you. For a great number of people it's a lousy winter and people just aren't shooting as much, so before you start making all types of changes, take that into consideration.

Four weeks would just be too long a period. This is supposed to be kept fresh, what you're shooting now, not what you shot last month, I'm sorry if you can't process something in two weeks and post it here, then find one of the challenges in the forum to post it to. I don't think opening it up to other cameras is going to make that much of a difference either as you don't get a lot of traffic from other forums here. Unless you go posting in other forums that you'll be doing that, and that opens up all other types of problems.

Really this is being analyzed to death...it's not supposed to be anything more than just sharing a few photos you took in the last few weeks. Now the Photo Challenges here that are what need a little cleaning up in how they're run and judged, perhaps some should take a little time in viewing how photos should be critiqued...it'll help your own photography, and give a little better insight to what makes a good photo.

with another landscape. The birds must have flown the coop this week. A bold take on a wintry scene proving all is not lost in the colder months.

Hmm. Not really sure how it would work to have simulaneous POTW threads open.

Thanks. I'll take it. Every penny counts these days!
