a d300 w/ "DSC_2232" showing on last pic data. Is this the correct method for actual shutter count?

No, you need to Google it and read it from the EXIF data I think.

No, that counter can be manually reset, and it will automatically roll over ever 1000 images.

There are lots of different ways to get the actual shutter count. Possibly the easiest is using the nikonshuttercount.com website where you upload a .jpg from the camera.

You can also use an exif viewer like opanda or some of the other ones.

No, that is the shutter count since the last reset.

If you have Photoshop or Irfanview, you can get the total number of shots from any of your images, right on your computer. There may be other editors/viewers that will also provide the info, so you need to check the software that you have.

There are a number of programs on the net you can use or download to use, if you do a search for them.

I like Irfanview. It's free and does a lot of stuff and is a pretty good viewer. It has both 32 and 64bit versions and can be found at the Irfanview site . If you get it, make sure to dowload the plugins for it too, along with anything else you might want. The plugins provide a lot of functionality, and will give you the extended EXIF info that has the total shutter count in it.

I always found this to be pretty simple

1. Open the image using 'Preview'
2. Click 'Command' and 'I' keys together
3. In the window that opens up, click on the middle tab with the label '!'
4. Click on the 'Nikon' tab
5. The camera shutter count is number five on the list of items.

IrfanView is great, but I don;t think you can use it if you are running a mac, since I suspect Irfanview only runs on a PC?

Here is the answer, direct from the horse's mouth. :-)

Q: Can I use IrfanView on Mac?
A: Yes, probably. There is no native-Mac version of IrfanView. However, you can use IrfanView in conjunction with Mac program like WineBottler/DARWINE. Take the ZIP version of IrfanView and unzip it or copy your existing Windows IrfanView folder to Mac. This is easier because the installer may need additional Windows DLLs to run.

Hey, thanks Kerry, I might just try that, its a great tool that I used for years before moving from PC to mac, and I'd love to have it again.

Glad to help! :-) I've used it for so long that I can't remember how many OS versions have come and gone since, so I know how you feel.
