I preordered a D500 the day it was announced, as it seems a great way to get extra reach for my bird photography, as well as all the benefits that the fast frame rate and killer auto-focus bring. However in Australia it is priced at $2770 AUD compared with the D750 at $2170 AUD - a $600 difference!! By the time I get a 64 Gb XQD card and card-reader the D500 is only $120 AUD less than a D810. I might have to reconsider!

Cheers,

Gary.

The d750 and d810 cannot focus kangaroos... Just koalas

Just wait some months until we see review and comparison. The d500 its expensive but has the lastest tech...besides we are paying a high price for a camera that is supposed to last lots of years.

I do not know where you looked, but my price reference source for Nikon gear is European Camera Specialists in Sydney, and they offer the D500 for $2,350.00.

By the way, I do not think adding the cost of the SD card and the card reader to the price of the camera is fair, as you would have to buy those for the D810 as well.

For your reference the same website lists the D810 for $3,350.00

An SD card etc ..it's XQD card and reader. They are not any good for D810.
I stand corrected. Let me rephrase that sentence:

"By the way, I do not think adding the cost of the SD card and the card reader to the price of the camera is fair, as you would have to buy a suitable memory card and reader for the D810 as well."

I trust this will be satisfactory.

. is that how you take these things? I was not meant in 'that' fashion. I apologise if that's the case

He's not happy with the PRICE of the entry to XQD.. they are not anywhere near SD kit prices, like for like.

I agree with him that they are expensive.. BUT, as I have already mentioned if he wants that he must be prepared to pay the entry fee.
I trust this will be satisfactory.
?
Aha ...

Sorry. My mistake.

It has taken me a while to comprehend what the OP intended to say.

That's the camera store where I'll be getting mine as well. I did find one other store in Perth(Leederville's) that advertised a price of $2399, but ECS seem to be the cheapest.

Also, at a price of $1,999USD(plus taxes?), on the current exchange rate, it's actually cheaper to buy in Australia than the US - doesn't happen very often at all!

It may be because the Australian prices are based on the value of the Yen, rather than US dollars.

Basically, the price is based on the exchange rate of the currency used against the Yen, regardless of which country.

Lenses and the weight they impose on the system are not factored into your comparison. That would even the score some.

UI and features are also something that you have to take into account in weighing the relative advantages of each.

The D750 may have a better sensor, it is certainly larger which is a two-edged sword (better DOF isolation, more problematic wide angle corner performance). However, we don't know what the difference between the D750 and the D500 will be in practical terms, and at high ISOs where you may be DOF constrained (can't go to f/1.4 because its too shallow on FX, for instance), or for telephoto work where you might be reach constrained (have to crop the D750 to the point that the D500 could cover the entire remaining area), the D500 will often be the preferred solution in those scenarios even in relatively low light.

Personally, if I could only have one camera, I would choose the D500 over the D750 and the D810 over either of those. In fact, the D750 doesn't even make it on to my wish list at all -- that is, if I could have three cameras I still wouldn't take the D750 as it simply doesn't suit me -- YMMV.

Hi there,

I do not know if it is any ointment for the price pain in Australia but here in Canada we get our share of pain too. The Canadian dollar is under the bottom half of the toad now. So, the price for the D500 is CAD 2,699.99

Still, the pre-order list is quite strong for the D500. Mine is among the early ones. The specs of the camera puts it into a desirable segment for action and wildlife shooters. Well, I hope that we'll get many years of good use of this pro quality DX camera.

Best to all there down and under, AIK :-)

I got the 200-500 at Broadway Camera last month for $1500 Canadian, when it goes for $1400 US in the US. Pretty good deal!

I'm not happy about the price in Germany either... as usual it costs more than in the US - 2329 € for the preorders, which is about 2593$ ? I was hoping it would be around 2000€ ...

(This was another point that pushed me to consider the D750 instead, i don't need the buffer and fps that often really and i'm a bokeh addict who always wanted FX anyway haha... if everything goes according to plan i'll pick up a D750 next month.)

Yes, thank you Tony, you said it more accurately :-)

ECS is now listing the D500 at $2765!!!
That sucks!

Apparently Nikon Australia have revised their prices.

I wonder if retailers accepted any pre-orders at that price, and if the did, are they going to honour them.

If we all stay put the prices will go down for sure. For me, it is way too expensive.

Not true of Canada for many brands and products. While the Yen and CAD have moved roughly in parallel over several years, Canadian prices for newer products reflect the strength of the US dollar/weakness of the CAD it seems. Two years ago it was common for a camera or lenses to be the same in USD and CAD, today new product CAD prices are almost all 25 to 35% higher.

Glad I got my Oly 40-150 2.8 last year when they prices were on par (Same price in both markets regardless of the currency values, $1499) and it was actually cheaper in real terms to by it in Canada given the lower value of the CAD.

Right now the D500 is $1999 USD $2699 CAD. Ouch. (Though in actual value that's about on par at today's exchange rate)
