I had a problem with my pictures...the just didnt' hit you...they were nice...dont get me wrong...but they had no oomph....well the other day I bought the PS7 bible...and low and behold I found my oomph in one setting...heheh...

Make a copy of your background layer....
open up the hue/saturation adjustments
move saturation up to 20~40%(mostly to taste)
(yep the colors will pop out and look really bad...but wait)
median the layer at 6 pixels
gaus blur it at 4 pixels
(should be really fuzzy now)
change blend mode to color....
voila.....

I imagine you could do the same with adjustment layers...but you still need a second layer to run the median and gaus on(both layer then have to be blended with color setting)

If you find that your saturation is still too much you can change the opacity(or delete the layer and start over....)

also I read some nice tips on per channel levels changes....

Hi Bob:

You will find it under filters, noise, median and use the slider to set the amount to 6.

Judy

actually that refers to a program other than photoshop but the introduction will apply to PS as well:

The median filter is an example of a non-linear rank filter, which replaces each pixel with the median value of those in its neighborhood. It is an excellent noise remover, while other rank operations that use the minimum or maximum brightness pixel in the neighborhood are used for other purposes. Photoshop has several median filters that operate in different size neighborhoods. The fastest, smallest one is Filter -> Noise -> Despeckle which ranks five pixels at a time (the central pixel and its four edge-touching neighbors).

Larger median ranking neighborhoods can be chosen interactively using the Filter -> Noise -> Median selection. The slider is used to adjust the size of the circular neighborhood. Notice that the size of the neighborhood must be larger than the scale of the noise but smaller than the dimensions of any structure in the image that is important to subsequent analysis. However, the median filter does not smooth or blur the boundaries of regions or features in the image.

I just like very much the look of strong and saturated colors!

I had allot of the same questions, and Im not all that PS literate and very frustrating when you see some great photo's out there!. Allot use some actions from Fred Miranda tha will do it for you! I just downloaded CS Pro 1.1, what a great move that was. Helped my images immensely and the click of a button!

for web viewing, FM has one for web presenter so you dont loose detail when posting on the web, that helped big time! Give it a shot

Eric,

That works pretty good!
Here is a before and after example.

I used 25% Saturation, 6 Median, 4 Gaus Blur, Blend Mode to Color.
I adjusted layer opacity to 85%.

I made an Action of your Color Enhancing Recipe. You can download it from here:

Thanks!

I used this method (from the original post) on a photo I was preparing for a client's monthly ad for the home decor magazines here. The photo needed a bit more punch colourwise. The results looked very good my computer screen, however when I got the proofs back it seemed to me that the colour had a slightly bleeded look. It was OK with this particular photo, but I'd be careful about it next time.

Ron in Italy

I meant to say that the colours seemed to have bled slightly.

(is that correct?)

That method gives to much color bleeds i'm affraid.. in some pictures it won't show but in others with details like eyes and other areas between strong colors and non colors it will produce a much un wanted bleed effect.

Another way to punch your colors without that effect is the good old channel mixer so called Velvia punch :)

Put a channel mixer adjustment layer on your picture and use the following settings for starters:

Red channel ~ red 120% ~ green -10% ~ blue -10%
Green channel ~ red -10% ~ green 120% ~ blue -10%
Blue channel ~ red -10% ~ green -10% ~ blue 120%

This picture shows the bleeding on the top pic, her skin colors has bleeded into her eyes and the blue backpack shows serious bleeds and therefore loss of detail.. and the bottom is the channelmixer version.

Best regards / Johny
