Pbase have turned into a pay site, and free membership are limited by size and more then this in time so that 30 days after one registers the membership is locked so that one can not upload images. And they say they will delete those accounts in the future.

I have came across a site called photo navy : http://pnavy.com/ it claims "a free photo gallery with unlimited albums, hardcopy print options, auto-thumbnailing, image manipulation, font and color control, photo-ratings, comments, and more…"

I have looked into the site and it is not a nice as pbase, and some of the images are well… not ones you will see on pbase including some that seem like porn.
Do you know something about this site?
Or can you recommend another free photo hosting site?

Thanks

Well, I can not offer all the features like auto-thumbnailing, hard copy print options, font and color control or any of that good stuff. All I can offer you is just a basic place to upload your images so you can just link it to forums like these or to show your friends and family, except it will be the size you upload it as. if you are interested, just drop me a line at [email protected].

Overall it is worth the small amount of money. I have found that I won't even go to other sites to view images as you are spammed by popups.

I went to someone photosite the other day and it was like a video game getting rid of the pop-ups. As fast as I could remove them two more would pop-up.

thanks Greg, I hear you.

this site have no pop ups for the moment, the point is that I do not want to pay, now, for the limited use I need. maybe when I grow up in demand I may be willing to pay, and Pbase is a fine site indeed.

Hi,

Here is the link http://www.ezoshosting.com/webhostingplans.php . They are not free but for $2.99/month you get 25 meg or $5.99 for 100 meg. They will install the website for you and the photo gallery for free. I hope this helps.

Good Luck.

Some folks do not like the free sites as they expect pop-ups and/or spam. For example, one of the more common free sites right now is ImageStation. They do require viewers to sign up with them. To my knowledge, however, they do not spam. And there is only an occasional pop-up window (even when it happens, there is only ONE pop-up that opens). I like them because they are FREE, and they also seamlessly integrate both stills along with video.

There are other sites that are free, but most of them do not offer the functionality of ImageStation.

Pbase is a very common pay site, and the cost is not as large as others. But I rarely recommend it. I like Slug the webmaster and have had good interchanges with him, but his site has issues. It's down often. The interface isn't particularly helpful to users. And when it's running, it just feels slow. So I find that I don't enjoy the experience there, particularly with it being a PAY site.

I'm currently investigating other options. I shoot a lot, and I plan on continuing to post a lot. I may even start selling some of my shots from gallery locations. So I'm investigating options for these things.

I do not know whether photo.net offers free storage of images, but you could check over there. Most places are now transforming into pay sites, though we may not like it.
thanks Greg, I hear you.

Does your ISP give you some personal web space? If so, upload your pics to there. You'll have to generate the pages etc yourself, but there are dozens of apps to do that for you.

Shalom, Ulysses.

First and foremost thanks for the informative answer.

I do understand, why pbase is going into pay site mode of operation, and I can't complain when one puts a price tag on a service. But this is the first time I have encountered a "shareware" approach to websites, that is to say - after a certain amount of time it stops being functional. I am used to the system that lets one get limited set of function, reduced service if you will, and as one grows in needs one pays for the extra ( like Yahoo services).

The point is that my needs are VERY humble, mostly an upload of a pic every once in a while so that I can link to it from this forum, I would not mind having a little space, it's just that they have blocked my ability to upload all together regardless of the disk space my pics take.
Some folks do not like the free sites as they expect pop-ups and/or

Thank you, I will look for this site.

Yes, I understand, I have noticed my self the problems that pbase seem to suffer from, but my needs are so little that it did not bother me.

All I can say is good luck with this venture. Being able to make a living, or even just receive a validation for one talent, is something all those who hold a camera dream about.

Please update us as to the results of your research; I am sure many will be interested.

Thank you for the replay, thank you for the advice. I am WELL aware of the principle of "you get what you pay for", but I am also aware that this is a simplified saying. I say it is simplified because sometimes we DO NOT get what we pay for. (as Ulysses pointed out )

But I have no complaint about pbase other then that I can't use that service anymore, my needs are of a minute scale, I need to post every now and then a photo HERE. There is no reason to pay for much more then I need. I MAY want more in the future and then I will pay gladly for a good service. I am sure that there are some who are just in the same position.

Hello, AdiB. :-)

Happy to be of help. I'm sure you'll find your site soon.

I don't mind that they ask you to pay. What I have little patience for is sites that offer a service for pay and then go down so constantly or have such slowdowns. I'll pay for them to keep my images displayed the way that I was promised.
The point is that my needs are VERY humble, mostly an upload of a
pic every once in a while so that I can link to it from this forum,
Yes, the free sites are excellent for this. But sometimes the consequences incurred by the free sites (signup or pop-ups) are not well liked by others.

If you want a site with all the functionality of Pbase - no ads - no pop ups - and some things that even Pbase does not offer - then you only have to look one place - http://www.photoshare.co.nz

The site will give you a free 50MB account for 90 days to test the water so to speak and then after that it is only $6 dollars US per year per 50 MB chunck of space - that is HALF the cost of Pbase. PhotoShare is also the model of uptime - has not been down since I joined - and I was one of the first to join. They allow direct linking to specific galleries or specific photos and also allow password protected galleries (a feature that I really wanted). Give it a look - its the best combination of features and value out there right now.

Hi Adi,

Look at http://photo.instantlogic.com/

This is actually a software company that demonstrates their product
with this application. I don't know how long they'll keep on doing
it but as long as it's free ....

----
Itamar
I have been using them for a little while and have been very impressed. You get 200MB of space for free. Like Itamar said, the company is using the space to promote its main product, but other than a couple of small adds to the side, one does not notice. I have not seen pop-ups or other obnoxious advertising. As the previous poster mentioned, there is no way of knowing how long they will remain free, but the same goes for all sites (just look at Pbase). I highly recommend it. The interface is easy, it allows password protected galleries, and allows people to order photos if you like.

http://www.fotopic.net
250meg free

I saw someone post about this a few days ago. I've setup a trial gallery and have played with it a little. Seems to have lots of nice features. Can't say anything about uptime. Seems a little slow for me here in the US as it is based in the UK.

Might be worth checking out.
