Heh , heh. Looks more Graphic to me, though. :)

That's a handheld Fairchild Aerial Camera. We were still being issued those as late as 1965 for ariel surveillance photography, though we almost never used that handheld version.

LOL.. that's so true and looks like they included a flippy ovf too :)

cheers don

Looking at the photo in the OP, and comparing with this, were there very different sizes of these cameras in existence? In the OP it can hardly be called hand held. More like a bear hug hold?

Vacuum system to keep the film flat ...

What format film? It doesn't look like the easiest piece of equipment to use.
A swift Google found references to 5.25 inch roll film and also to 9.5 inch roll film for some different models, so take your pick. They needed something like 200 foot rolls to get many shots during a pass.

Anybody know much about the cameras mounted in fighters?

This looks like a camera that belongs in a bomber. I think some cameras were mounted in place of guns on fighter planes. Rather than strafe bullets, they strafed.. frames.

I am certain they wouldn't have strapped this guy and his camera to the wing of a Mustang or something..

IN my younger days I developed the 9.5 inch stuff. 200 ft rolls, agitated by winding between two spools dunked in stainless steel tubs. Tedious, but astonishing clarity. Those are some cost-no-object lenses.

"Go big or go home" has a whole new meaning for me.

I'd imaging the press release will brag, "Shutter shock banished via our patented MassDamping(tm) system.

Cheers,

Rick

This made me laugh maybe more than I should hahaha.
