What am I doing wrong with the focus?

But you did not bother drawing the sketch, did you.

Try this.

Put your camera on a tripod.

Get a piece of string 15 feet long.

Tape it to the front of your camera.

draw a line on the ground with the heel of your shoe, or place a couple of soup cans and cereal boxes on the floor, so they are parallel to the camera, 15 feet in front of the camera (Imagine you are pointed straight at a barn wall, etc.)

Walk out the 15 feet to the end of the string, straight ahead of the camera.

The walk sideways, toward the side.

Does the string still reach to our imaginary barn, our line in the sand, or our row of cereal boxes and soup cans?

Or does the string not reach that far?

OR TRY THIS

Get a ruler.

Sit right in front of the middle of your monitor

Put the ruler up against your nose, so it just reaches the middle of your monitor.

Now rotate the ruler toward the edge of your monitor?

Without moving your head, does the ruler reach the edge?

BAK

A picture of an anonymous stranger, posted on the Internet without permission, perhaps.
Permission is not required when in a public place...unless say he was smoking and you used him in a cigarette advert or something commercial

There are currently no general privacy laws under UK law, but the UK courts must take into account the European Convention on Human Rights, which gives everyone the right to respect for their private and family life.

so as a streat is not a private place you can expect to have your photo takan

Police in the UK have no powers to stop you taking photos in a public place,

Which dial mode are you in? If green square aka auto+ that is ai-focus af mode.

One-shot is a drive mode not an af-mode. AF mode is single , ai-servo, ai-focus. Avoid ai-focus mode.

I am on AV most of the time. There are 3 choices in "AF operation" menu. They are one shot, ai focus and ai servo. I used one shot.

It sounds like what you're saying is that you've used this combo of camera/lens/technique many times with results you were happy with, except this one time. That sounds like what you're saying.

So therefore, it's a fluke. Get over it and take more shots. On my iPhone, the photo looks good, the subject well isolated from the background.
