I have a granddaughter that wants to get started in photography and she needs to setup a website to post some of her photo shoots that she's done. Any suggestions?

Many depends what she wants to do

Flickr for simple storing and displaying

500px for a more professional feel and with a chance of selling

I use both. I almost everything on flickr, I cherry pick my favorites for 500px

There is also self hosting I'e buy a domain and build a website there are a lot templates out there she could use, so you don't need to know HTML etc.

There is also smugmug, google photos, Amazon photos the list goes on.

But personally i would look at 500px and Flickr first.

Flickr is great for what I call a photographic stream of consciousness.

Smugmug is a reasonably clean platform that I use for a more directed portfolio.

I agree with everything said above also.

As a purely simple and free gallery, how about here at DPReview? It's super simple to upload and they allow 1,000 pictures for free. You can also create separate albums she can keep separate "shoots" in if she wants.

I reserve the right to make mistakes in reasoning and logic as well as to change my mind anytime I wish. I also ask forbearance with respect to my typos. Please take a look at my gallery here at DPR.

Lots of good suggestions.

I have a web host that provides me with domains, e-mail addresses, and lots of space. Web hosts are cheap. You can get a really basic one for about $2/month! Domains cost $5/year and up.

There are countless free or inexpensive apps that will create a gallery:
  • Porta [free]
  • The galleries provided w/ Lightroom
  • Anything by The Turning Gate [some free]
  • jAlbum! [not free, but VERY good, fast, and easy]
Flickr will not impress anyone; it's ugly.

This question has been asked many times. You'll find lots of good answers by searching the forums. I use and recommend Zenfolio.

I find carbonmade to be THE easiest site (free for basic) to create a nice looking portfolio. You can see mine here .

If you want unlimited galleries with more editing options then weebly (also free) is great. You can create simple galleries (eg portrait portfolio) or slideshows (eg Mt Bromo) with ease.

Ultimately it depends on what her goal is. A lot of photographers, when starting out, use free resources like Tumblr or even Instagram as their main gallery. If she's serious, however, and this could be used long-term for jobs, or even as a career, then she'll want to look at one of the professional platforms. There's a number of options, but strictly from a photography perspective, I like Format. I use it myself and find it the most intuitive.

Being a grandfather myself (6- ages 9-16) I'd be inclined to ask her what type of help she desires. The above posts have provided YOU with many options to discuss and plan with her.
