4k on A7II

Also, could I use an external recorder such as the Atomos Shogun to record 4k in some way? Or would that still be stuck at 1080p?
Nobody has answered this part of the question yet. I also am interested to know if an external recorder can be used to record 4K in some way - or not?
Hello,

The a7ii does not have native 4k video output, so no it will not output 4k to an external recorder.

The Atomos Shogun may be able to upscale 1080p to 4k on the fly, but you'll have to check with the manufacturer to confirm.

The 7 II performs line skipped 1080p or less in all modes - it's still amazing video quality, but it's not full sensor readout like the S II, NX1 can do.

It doesn't matter whether you use an external recorder - still 8 bit line skipped 1080p.

I also have an EX1 that does not line skip but also does not do 4K internal or if I understand right to any external recorder, though otherwise it is great apart from in very low light. Earlier this year I got an A7II for the stills not video but ever since the arrival of the A7RII am considering "upgrading" either the A7II or the EX1 or both to an A7RII to get in one unit a big beautiful full frame sensor with very fine low light capability and 4K recording.

the older a6000 \ a7 had the ability to record 4k but they would overheat, I guess the same with the a7II, big sensor and small body isn´t very good for the heat dissipation, the only small cameras with 4k I recall are the samsung nx500, and the new rx100IV but both have gimmick 4k due to overheating, one crops 1.6 the other limits it to 5 min.
is there a mod that allows 4k video for a7..? where did you read that?
