Helen Betts and Tanglefoot in TROUBLE - Phil HELP

But geezLouise, that is some kind of move you are making!! I can't even fathom how something like that happens.

Glad to see your face around here again!

Nancy

Well, in desperation I finally registered under a different name
and email address (unfortunately one that I will rarely be able to
receive email at) to be able to post here. The system obviously
knew who I was since all my information had been transferred to the
new account. I wonder if I can change my email address back to AOL
or if that will totally screw up my account again?

Anyway, I can't explain what happened earlier; I wrote to Phil
personally via email and also requested a new password on the DPR
site on Saturday from Okinawa through OCN, an ISP I've had for the
past three years, but to no avail. Then I wrote yesterday (I think
it was) from San Francisco; I'm on a dial-up connection here, so
the ISP is AOL. It's unlikely that both providers are preventing me
from receiving emails with passwords! In addition, I had the exact
same problem with The Washington Post and had to request my
password (in Okinawa); it came through within seconds. I wonder if
it had anything to do with the fact that I had requested a new
password from DPR a few months ago while I was traveling to
Okinawa's outer islands? Perhaps DPR doesn't want to issue more
than one replacement password?

Well, in any case, it's good to be back. It was extremely
frustrating not to be able to reply to threads, not that I've had
much time to do so. We are currently moving from Okinawa back to
Turkey, so are transiting San Francisco, Portland, Washington,
D.C., Tampa, Brussels, Istanbul and finally Ankara, all this with a
lot of luggage and a dog!

Welcome back, Helen!

Don't take my word for it, but I've switched my account's e-mail several times without any issues whatsoever.

I think I've changed my password several times, too. No issues, even though I've wiped hard drives, used different computer systems, other PCs, etc.

Hope I'm not giving you bad advice and causing yu grief. :-)

I hope you took a lot of pictures of your move. What a photo opportunity if you had any energy left. Welcome back.

Thanks, Mike. Yes, I must admit I have a hard time believing the ISP thing, especially since I tried to get a new password using two separate ISPs both in Okinawa and in San Francisco. Anyway, it's resolved for now; just hope this doesn't happen again...

Helen
Something strange going on and it's surely with DPR on the basis that:

1. I have no trouble at all logging into DPR from any other
computer. My ISP and e-mail address haven't changed and all I need
to provide is that e-mail address and my usual password.

2. Helen's e-mail address won't have changed and her AOL account
has worked previously without a hitch worldwide (literally).

Beats me! :-(

Hi Nancy,

Well, my husband is with the State Department, so we are just traveling to our new assignment. (We were posted to Turkey before going to Okinawa three years ago, as well.) But it's a very stressful trip, especially with a hyper, sometimes nasty to strangers dog in tow. We have four large suitcases, carry on luggage and a large dog carrier. It's a nightmare in airports, and we won't arrive in Ankara until around Sept. 10-11. Can't wait for this to be over!

Hi Ulysses,

Well, I did take your word for it and changed my email address; it seems to have taken OK (although I haven't received any email from anyone yet, so who knows :-)).

Nice to be back, though; that was a totally frustrating experience!

Tanglefoot should be back. He resumed his former internet provider.

It seems to have something to do with a change of providers. Since I went to Windows xp it never remembers any passwords at all.

Software and such seem to have minds of their own.

Perhaps Phil can determine a way for the password to be sent to a friend that the applicant authorizes. It is a shame that someone cannot change internet providers. May this could be a secure win-win solution.

I send attachments to friends and some never get them due to these odd filters and then I have to re-mail them to an alternate address. I know that is a bit tricky with a password set up. But not necessarily insurmountable.

Phil seems to be pretty computer savvy...

Linda
We have no current problems with our mail / password server. I
have just re-tested it with several external mail services and it's
providing new passwords within seconds.
Received the following email from Helen Betts this AM:
I just happened to see your response to a thread about Tanglefoot
being shut
out of STF -- well, me too. I lost my password in the move from
Okinawa and
change in computers. I wrote to Phil twice, with no response, and I
have tried
three times to get a new password. It always says it is coming, but
it never
does.

There have been several posts I wanted to reply to and I would have
liked to
voted in the Challenge, but I am prohibited from posting anything,
so I won't.

Anyway, would you be able to please add my predicament to
Tanglefoot's? I
sure can't!

Thanks,

Helen

Is ANYONE at the helm of Dpreview? Both Tanglefoot and Helen Betts
have been waiting for days to get their new password to get back on
DPreview. No reply from Phil!

How can we help them? I hope Mr. U has a direct line to Phil and
can get the information to help these valued STF memebrs back on
the line.

For both to have trouble, well it sounds like we all need to have
our password tatooed somewhere safe.

Sounds like catch 22. He can't change it. Sounds like he needs to
start a new account

Aha- great minds think alike...:-)
I suppose that perhaps someone that Tanglefoot trusts could be
given his information and password so that they can log on and make
changes, communicate those changes to Tanglefoot that would allow
him to take control of the account again. If this is in fact all
the problem is.
I now tried cs.com instead of cs.com-old and then it works.

Hi Gene,

Well, I took plenty of photos before leaving Okinawa but simply haven't had time to organize them. I'm now in Marin, where I grew up, which is just north of San Francisco, where I was born, and I've taken exactly three pictures from our hotel. Funny, but since I spent most of my life here, I rarely take pictures when in town, despite the fact that it's a beautiful area. But I am anxious to re-photograph Turkey when I finally get there!

Helen

So nice to hear from a 'lurker'.

It may seem that there is a clich here, but everyone's thinking, experience and ideas are invited.

So, to any other lurkers, our doors and minds are open. Please join in!

Water's fine!

Linda
Hi, just a thought re this, as I have just had problems logging in
from my XP machine. I forgot about cookie handling and so couldn't
log in depsite requesting and receiving new passwords (which came
through very quickly btw).
Could this be part of Helen and Tanglefoot's problem?

Regards.
Peter Dyson (lurker and ?soon to be V1 owner)

Hi Linda,

Thank you! I was soooo irritated every time I would go to respond to a thread and couldn't do it -- I really do value being a member of this forum and missed being able to participate.

Thanks also for your wishes for a safe trip; I really can't wait for it to be over. Too much of a hassle and too expensive!

Helen

You are one of the reasons STF is such a nice place to be :-)

similar thing happend to me twice when I forgot the password when I was away from the forum for a long time.

Surprising thing is that for a week I would fill in the details on the webpage to email the password and I wouldnt get any response at all.

I must have written many about 4 times to the webmaster, suppourt link and to phil but got no response from that either.

It took me about 2 weeks to remember the password.

I understand that it is a free fourm and Phil is at liberty to respond or not as he wishes.

I guess we have to take it as it is.
