Hi, I have hit a problem with Hotmail. Hotmail opens but I cannot access the messages.

I checked C:Drive and found that windows had been replaced and labelled windows.old.

I set up my computer a couple of weeks ago; brand new SSD and installed win10 pro using a bought disk.

There does not seem to be a reason why win10 has been replaced. Unless of course Microsoft updates have caused this.

I have attached a screen shot of C:drive.

As I opened Hotmail my anti-virus [Avast] gave warning about malware. I have attached a screenshot. The transfer time shows when I attempted to open Hotmail. The suspected item is in the virus chest.

When I set the computer up I installed a recovery point after setting up the basics. That point is no longer there.

Grateful for any suggestions. Is the suspect item a false positive, has win 10 been replaced?

Given that I have not really installed a lot I am inclined to format the drive and start again.

Peter

When you upgrade from Win 7/8 to Win 10 the setup copies the old version to Windows.old folder.

You have 30 days to test Win 10 and after that Windows will delete the .old folder.

Hi,

I have not upgraded from win7. I installed from a win 10 disk which I purchased.

Hotmail works on other machines.

There is no reason for win 10 to have been replaced.

My thoughts are to rename the 'current' windows folder and go back to the original.

Hi,

Yes a clean install on a new SSD. No win7 or downloaded win 10 update.

Why would my original windows be replaced?

Peter

I think these are two unrelated issues.

The disk you bought what version is it?

If you type now winver it will give you 1511 which is November upgrade and if so your previos Win10 version is windows.old.

I have the same thing on my drive.

As far as Hotmail you probably receive a virus in email.

Hi,

Build version as you stated. Build date is given as 10/26/2015 on package.

Go to Windows Update. There should be an option for "View your update history"

Post a screenshot here.

Hi, Sorry for the delay. I tried every recovery system but none worked. I undid system restore eventually.

I don't know why you tried System Restore then there is nothing wrong. Apparently your original disk is not 1511 November update because November update was installed on Jan 28th and that is why you have windows.old.

Hi,

Any idea why Hotmail would not work?

Having tried all the repair options after system restore failed to work and left windows unable to restart I used the undo function in system restore. That at least enabled windows to restart and I now find that Hotmail works OK again.

I cannot think of a reason. Also the restore point that I inserted is no longer there.

Many thanks for your help

Peter

No idea.

Hotmail is browser based isn't it? So maybe something happened to the browser.

Try accessing Hotmail with a different browser like Firefox or Google Chrome.

Hi,

Fortunately everything seems back to normal. At the time Hotmail would not display the content of messages with either Chrome nor IE although the list of messages still appeared on screen. Hotmail was working on another machine so I knew the problem was with the PC.

Several things have happened with Win10. Originally I allowed the win10 upgrade from win7 but found when I had a problem the rescue options did not work. I then used an ISO file to restore the system but found another problem. Win 10 does not allow you to restore the system to a disk of your choice although it does in theory offer the option of choosing a location. I tried to search for the location of my choice but win10 would not list it as an option. I ended up with windows installed on one of my photo disks.

I decided to replace my desktop computer and installed a retail version of win10. Everything seemed OK until Hotmail had the problem. I then looked at system restore only to find that the restore point that I installed after loading my programs no longer existed. On checking, the original build had been replaced presumably by updates but without retaining the restore point.

I did try the only restore point available but then windows would not restart. Again using all of the various rescue options none would allow windows to restart or could solve the problem.

In the end I went back to system restore and undid the restore action. Windows then restarted and Hotmail seemed back to normal.

I had tried sfc /scannow but that did nothing to restore any files.

My advice to anyone using win10 to be very cautious. Certainly a backup file is needed. It seems that the rescue systems on win 10 are flaky and using an ISO file is not without its problems.

Other than that win 10 seems to be OK and I wouldn't knock it; just know your enemy.

Hi,

Hotmail problem solved.

Apparently AVAST wrongly Identified a file as malware

App0x_PnpEKl8j_NfvLFVyNA5mYQ2[1]etc.

The Avast forum has several related comments.

Hi,

That is true.

Having tried to use the rescue features of win10 I thought that it was wise to point out that they did not always work.

Or maybe there was nothing to rescue? :-D
