being a v1/'10d owner i have been searching for the perfect 4 by 6 in home printer, and the sony dppex5 dye sub printer is great! does anyione else have this printer, def beats my costco prints, colors seem much better and more vibrant

I have the DPP-EX7 and I'm quite pleased with it. Printing can be a little pricey. A kit for 75 prints costs me about $43 US. If you do the math you'll see that it come to about $0.57 per print. Note that the kit contains the paper and the dye sub cartriges.

This sounds good. I recently got a Canon i950 and, while I am very pleased with the quality of the prints, I have given many prints to friends at work and they all appear to be fading after just a couple of months. We get indirect sunlight in our part of the floor, but nothing direct. Kind'a disappointing. What's the image life expcetation for the dye subs?

After several years of printing with Pigmented inks, and still gettting dreadful fading, I have resigned myself to taking my pics via memory stick or cd to Costco where they use the same printing method as if I gave them a roll of film.

The results last MUCH longer with the silver alkoid process - as in 100 years if not put in direct light. (vs 3 or 4 with inkjet).

At $.19 for as 4 x 6 and $1.99 for an 8 x 10, I can't go wrong.

I just love it. The quality is incredible and the price can't be beat. I couldn't believe the quality of the 8x12 size. I would love to have a printer here, but I feel like the inks are way over-priced. It's to the point that when my printer runs out of ink, I'll go buy another printers (with ink cartridges supplied), rather than go spend the money for more cartridges. It's cheaper!

I think the only time it's really going to get to me is when I get to the point of wanting to print on oversized watercolor paper. I don't have the itch yet, but it's coming. I can feel it.

i have a ex5 too, and it's one nice, compact dye sub printer. i'm pleased with the quality. i recently bought a v1 and complemented it with a canon i950. both are great printers....if you want to print large photos (8X10) to fully utilize your v1/10d, i highly recommend the i950. but i'm assuming you already have an amazing printer that prints larger photos since you have two very impressive cameras!

yes, i agree the prints can get a little pricey but paper has went down the last six months...hopefully it'll continue to go down.

take care

--Since you corss post this I will respond, The sony while a good quality unit cant hold a candle to the HITI, any version. The sony prints are way over saturated, some like a cartoon look, and the sony drivers offer virtually no adjustment of the output. The Sony system offers only one plain printing format. The Hiti has a superior software driver and excellent photo manipulation system (desiree) comes with it. Hiti offers 3, at last count different types of paper including a sticker sheet that kids love. Had both, took the Sony back in two days. I am a sony fan with a large desktop, 717 and v1 and lots of other sony "stuff". In my opinion, compared to HITI, they missed the mark here.

Lots of people had trouble with white streaks on their prints. I found one for $125 in Office Max and grabbed it before reading reviews and found out that the paper and ink kits were very expensive in addition to the problem about the streaks. Returned it.
Bought a Hiti 640ps. Love it.

Hope your printer is a post-problem version. You will love having this small print capability.

The Wal-Mart prints are great. Got tired of $66+ to change the inks in my 6-ink Canon. They keep touting the fact that the ink was cheap to replace since you only had to replace one color at a time...some logic, huh?

My big concern is getting decently priced archival prints on matte paper for the artisitic, sketchy things.

The Hiti 640PS is an amazing printer. Shots from my V-1 far exceeded my expectations when printed on this unit. Cost per print without amortizing the printer is about .36 cents. They look better than any analogue or digital output I've seen from a consumer photo lab. As far as fade resistance is concerned, time will tell. The larger format stuff that gets framed and left out in room light isn't going to come from this unit anyway.

Hello,

I was a longtime Costco printer, until someone on this Forum referred me to EZPrints.com. The price is a few cents higher, but they offer greater choice, noticeably higher quality, a clean interface, and no fighting the crouds at Costco.

Mike.

Paper has a lot to do with fading. If you want to print on the longest lasting inkjet paper that I know, try the Ilford Galerie Pearl inkjet paper. It has a colorfastness of 20+ years without protection. The other Ilford Galerie papers like the Epson's photo papers need to be protected in either a glass frame or a plastic sleeve in a phote alumn. The inks from Canon are fine, but their paper fades faster than Epson's or Office Depot's. Go on the Printers and Printing Forum and you'll learn a lot about paper and inks. Hope this helps.

Sam's Club used to charge $.20 for a 4x6, now they're $.19. I didn't check the prices of the other sizes.

Probably in response to the competition!

I've been pleased with the quality, although I'd love to compare to the dye-sub printers mentioned elsewhere in this thread.

I remember that, because it looked like a good place to try out. They are a bit higher than just a few cents, so for now I'm going to stick to Costco. My reasoning is that because I'm a beginner, I am printing just about everything, so a few cents makes a difference. I'm telling you, though, when my shots start to get consistently better, EZPrints, here I come! I do like the variety they offer, plus it's something they specialize in-- they've got to be better.

Thanks for the reminder,

Nancy

When you print at Costco, can you wait for the printing or do you have to leave your mem card with them??

Our Wal-Mart just got one of those machines, so I guess I'll try them out... but that store makes me nuts.

Wouldn't it be fun to have one of the oversize inkjet printers? The cost would be prohitbitive and they are pigs to maintain, but boy... the fun might be a worthwhile trade-off.

... now they make me wait for a day. They told me this was their policy all along for digital, but I don't know about that.

I don't leave my memory stick with them. Truth is, I don't think they'd know what to do with it. At the Costco I go to they have the Noritsu (sp?) machine. I have been burning CDs, which I put into the machine, then select the images I want to print.

I was having a huge amount of trouble getting TIF images to print. I finally went to a larger Costco across town and they told me this was because their machines can only handle compressed TIFs. So now I only bring them JPGs and haven't had anymore glitchies. It was so weird, too-- the TIFs I had on CD would go through the Noritsu just fine, but when it was RIP'd (processed) to their other machine is when it failed. I'm thinking that the file size did it in.
